Vatican Forgives Lennon's Controversial Jesus Slam | Listening Post from Wired.com:

"Better late than never. The Vatican's official newspaper L'Osservatore Romano finally forgave John Lennon's infamous 1966 claim that his band was 'more popular than Jesus.'

And, yea, it was all good.

In a curious twist, the way-past-due change of heart and mind came on the 40th anniversary of The White Album's 1968 release. Look Vatican, we don't want to tell you how to do your job, but you might have wanted to forgive Lennon's statement in 2007, the 40th anniversary of The Beatles' epochal Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."

Push for Universal Health Program from Political Affairs Magazine

There are times in history when you and I must take action. This is one of those times. An Obama Presidency and a Democratic Congress gives us the best chance yet to win a national, single-payer healthcare system in the US.

We worked hard to build a movement for HR 676. This is where we've always wanted to be.

We face some challenges. Fresh off the $700 billion bailout of the banks, a GM bailout is now hanging in the balance. We can, and must, convince Washington that a single-payer, national healthcare system is the best way to help the auto industry. HR 676, the legislation we seek, will save auto companies millions of dollars in healthcare costs for their workers and retirees. It must be part of any recovery plan.

HR 676 will keep jobs here in the US!

Sean McCormack's Sadly Laughable Remarks from Political Affairs Magazine

The Bush administration struck a new note of irony and hypocrisy this week – if that is possible. In a press briefing, State Department spokesperson Scott McCormack told reporters Nov. 20 that "I would put the record of this administration up against any American administration or any other government around the world in terms of promoting universal human rights and pushing for human rights."

Such a challenging proposition requires a very selective presentation of the Bush record or presupposes an atrocious human rights record on the part of any past US president – perhaps the most accidentally honest thing McCormack could have ever said.

For its part, the Bush administration set human and civil rights back by a century at least. From the failure to respond in any meaningful or urgent manner to Hurricane Katrina to launching the war in Iraq based on lies, the major events of the Bush era are a poor basis on which to tout the quality of the administration's human rights record.

Undoing the Bush Environmental Legacy from Political Affairs Magazine

Right now Bush is pushing to open up thousands more acres in sensitive areas around three national parks in Utah to more oil and gas extraction.

Dear EarthTalk: How can the new Obama administration and/or Congress undo the many anti-environmental actions the Bush administration undertook over the last eight years, including the obstruction of Bill Clinton's landmark "roadless rule" legislation? -- Ann Lyman, Lake Tahoe, CA

The Bush administration has certainly been no friend to the environment. Besides working for eight years to overturn the Clinton administration's "Roadless Rule" that prevented road building (and the logging that usually follows) on 58.5 million acres of national forests, the Bush White House has opened up 45 million additional acres of public land across the American West to oil and gas drilling during its tenure.

House GOP embraces earmarks. Again. from Daily Kos

One of the most entertaining parts of watching the presidential debates on CNN with the focus group tracker was watching those numbers tumble every time McCain would start up one of his rants about earmarks. You could almost hear debate watchers thinking to themselves, "what the f' is he babbling about?" But for some reason, McCain was convinced that this was the burning issue that would deliver the White House to him.

Well, it turns out that not even House Republicans believed that crap.

For the second year in a row, the House GOP caucus rejected an effort to limit its members' requests for special projects, or earmarks, in this case a short-term moratorium.

The vote again exposed fissures among GOP conservatives and could undercut one of the party's signature themes, limited government.

GM board hasn't ruled out bankruptcy as an option | Freep.com | Detroit Free Press

"The board at General Motors Corp. has reviewed the possibility of bankruptcy, even as the cash-strapped automaker pursues congressional aid to help it survive the global credit crisis and the worst automotive sales environment in 25 years.

GM spokesman Tony Cervone acknowledged today that the board has examined the possibility of bankruptcy as an option the automaker may need to pursue should it not receive its share of a $25 billion low-cost loan package the Detroit automakers are seeking from Congress.

"The board has a fiduciary responsibility to review all options, and it has," Cervone said.

But the board, like management, "doesn't view that (bankruptcy) as a viable solution," he said."

BBC NEWS | Americas | Argentine man kills himself on TV:

"A former police chief in Argentina, wanted for alleged crimes against human rights, has shot himself dead in front of television cameras.

Mario Ferreyra was giving an interview on top of a water tank at his home in the northern province of Tucuman.

Police were coming to arrest him when he killed himself.

Mr Ferreyra was wearing his customary black shirt and cowboy hat and told the interviewer that he was innocent and had not committed any crimes.

He then told his wife, Maria, that he would love her forever, pulled a pistol from his boot and shot himself behind the ear."

Bush abuses to be probed? from Raw Story Breaking News

Advisers say Obama considering 'Presidential commission' on torture.

Despite the hopes of many human-rights advocates, the new Obama Justice Department is not likely to launch major new criminal probes of harsh interrogations and other alleged abuses by the Bush administration. But one idea that has currency among some top Obama advisers is setting up a 9/11-style commission that would investigate counterterrorism policies and make public as many details as possible. "At a minimum, the American people have to be able to see and judge what happened," said one senior adviser, who asked not to be identified talking about policy matters. The commission would be empowered to order the U.S. intelligence agencies to open their files for review and question senior officials who approved "waterboarding" and other controversial practices.

Obama aides are wary of taking any steps that would smack of political retribution. That's one reason they are reluctant to see high-profile investigations by the Democratic-controlled Congress or to greenlight a broad Justice inquiry (absent specific new evidence of wrongdoing). "If there was any effort to have war-crimes prosecutions of the Bush administration, you'd instantly destroy whatever hopes you have of bipartisanship," said Robert Litt, a former Justice criminal division chief during the Clinton administration. A new commission, on the other hand, could emulate the bipartisan tone set by Tom Kean and Lee Hamilton in investigating the 9/11 attacks. The 9/11 panel was created by Congress. An alternative model, floated by human-rights lawyer Scott Horton, would be a presidential commission similar to the one appointed by Gerald Ford in 1975 and headed by Nelson Rockefeller that investigated cold-war abuses by the CIA.

Dick Morris Openly Fund Raises for Saxby Chambliss on Hannity and Colmes from Crooks and Liars by Heather

He's a complete laughing stock after Obama's win, but he's FOX's go to guy. On Thursday night before the general election he predicted that the new Rev. Wright attack ads that played for three straight days were going to win the election for John McCain. How did that work for you, Dick? Now he's shilling for Saxby. Way to go.

"Emoluments," Clinton, and That Pesky Constitution from Daily Kos

"Why should you care?  By Executive Order dated January 4, 2008, President Bush ordered the salaries of Cabinet Secretaries to be raised from $186,600 to $191,300.  And Sen. Clinton's current term runs from 2007 through 2012.   As such, umm, we've got a slight problem.

This has, as you may have suspected, happened before.  In 1909, President Taft sought to nominate Sen. Philander Knox (R-PA) to be his Secretary of State, despite the position's pay having been hiked during his term.  As the NYT reported on Feb. 11, 1909, "With President-elect Taft rests the decision in the queer constitutional tangle that threatens to prevent the accession of Senator Knox to the Cabinet. The Senate to-day passed a bill designed to remove the legal barrier which prevents Mr. Knox from accepting the Portfolio of State" by rescinding the previous pay raise.  [HT: StubbornFacts.]  [N.B. If you click on that link, do scroll down to the item at the bottom as well.]

Bottom line?  Congress needs to act between now and January 20, 2009 if Sen. Clinton is to become Secretary Clinton, but precedent suggests that Congress will make it happen, regardless of whether it's actually, strictly constitutional.  I happen to think the "Saxbe fix" is consistent with the purpose behind Article I, Section 6, especially in a case such as this in which Sen. Clinton did not vote upon the pay raise applicable to the position, but you can fairly disagree based on the generosity of your interpretation.

Also?  Constitutional history is fun, and y'all ought to cogitate on it more often."

Chambliss Skips Vote On Unemployment Benefits While Giving A Campaign Speech On Unemployment from Think Progress by Amanda Terkel

On Thursday, Georgia's Department of Labor announced that the state's unemployment levels rose to 7 percent in October, the highest in 16 years; approximately 43,093 unemployed Georgians are looking for work. That same day, Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), who is locked in a tough run-off election battle with Democrat Jim Martin, gave a campaign speech on the state's economic troubles:

It's imperative that we continue down the road of putting liquidity, integrity and confidence back in the financial marketplace so that we can see the credit market free up and people having the ability to borrow money to to operate and expand their businesses.

Cato: GOP Survival Depends On Blocking Health Care Reform from Daily Kos

Basically, the argument is that universal health care would be so popular that Republicans would lose their grip on social conservatives. Michael F. Cannon makes the case:

Blocking Obama's Health Plan Is Key to the GOP's Survival

Ditto Baucus' health plan. And Kennedy's. And Wyden's.

Why? Norman Markowitz, a contributing editor at PoliticalAffairs.net (motto: "Marxist Thought Online"), makes an interesting point about how making citizens dependent on the government for their medical care can change the fates of political parties:

Cato Echoes Kristol's Point on Health Care from Open Left - Front Page

This week, my newspaper column noted that in 1993 Republican strategist Bill Kristol predicted the permanent minority status of the GOP if it allowed universal health care to pass. Interestingly, the Cato Institute is now echoing Kristol's argument for 2008 (h/t Jed L). As you can see, Democrats really do have not just the moral or electoral mandate motive to enact universal health care, but also the raw political motive.

UPDATED -- Report: Treasury Looking Into Whittle Pay from TPMmuckraker

The Treasury Department is reviewing concerns relating to the $18 million compensation package received by Mack Whittle, the former CEO of South Financial bank, reports the Greenville News.

As we noted yesterday, Whittle moved up the date of his retirement, possibly so that his pay wouldn't be subject to restrictions on companies participating in the bailout program. Last week, South Financial received $347 million as part of that program.

A spokesman with the office of S.C. Rep. Bob Inglis told the Greenville News: "[Treasury is] examining the issue."

Inglis and South Carolina governor Mark Sanford -- who Whittle had in recent years opposed politically -- had asked Treasury to probe the matter. Both are Republicans.

Children Dying in Haiti, Victims of Food Crisis from Truthout - All Articles

Port-au-Price, Haiti - The 5-year-old teetered on broomstick legs - he weighed less than 20 pounds, even after days of drinking enriched milk. Nearby, a 4-year-old girl hung from a strap attached to a scale, her wide eyes lifeless, her emaciated arms dangling weakly.

In pockets of Haiti accessible only by donkey or foot, children are dying of malnutrition - their already meager food supply cut by a series of devastating storms that destroyed crops, wiped out livestock and sent food prices spiraling.

This Is Change? Twenty Hawks, Clintonites and Neocons to Watch for in Obama's White House from Truthout

from http://www.truthout.org/112108D

A who's who guide to the people poised to shape Obama's foreign policy.

U.S. policy is not about one individual, and no matter how much faith people place in President-elect Barack Obama, the policies he enacts will be fruit of a tree with many roots. Among them: his personal politics and views, the disastrous realities his administration will inherit, and, of course, unpredictable future crises. But the best immediate indicator of what an Obama administration might look like can be found in the people he surrounds himself with and who he appoints to his Cabinet. And, frankly, when it comes to foreign policy, it is not looking good.

Obama has a momentous opportunity to do what he repeatedly promised over the course of his campaign: bring actual change. But the more we learn about who Obama is considering for top positions in his administration, the more his inner circle resembles a staff reunion of President Bill Clinton's White House. Although Obama brought some progressives on board early in his campaign, his foreign policy team is now dominated by the hawkish, old-guard Democrats of the 1990s. This has been particularly true since Hillary Clinton conceded defeat in the Democratic primary, freeing many of her top advisors to join Obama's team.

"What happened to all this talk about change?" a member of the Clinton foreign policy team recently asked the Washington Post. "This isn't lightly flavored with Clintons. This is all Clintons, all the time."

Amid the euphoria over Obama's election and the end of the Bush era, it is critical to recall what 1990s U.S. foreign policy actually looked like. Bill Clinton's boiled down to a one-two punch from the hidden hand of the free market, backed up by the iron fist of U.S. militarism. Clinton took office and almost immediately bombed Iraq (ostensibly in retaliation for an alleged plot by Saddam Hussein to assassinate former President George H.W. Bush). He presided over a ruthless regime of economic sanctions that killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, and under the guise of the so-called No-Fly Zones in northern and southern Iraq, authorized the longest sustained U.S. bombing campaign since Vietnam.

Under Clinton, Yugoslavia was bombed and dismantled as part of what Noam Chomsky described as the "New Military Humanism." Sudan and Afghanistan were attacked, Haiti was destabilized and "free trade" deals like the North America Free Trade Agreement and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade radically escalated the spread of corporate-dominated globalization that hurt U.S. workers and devastated developing countries. Clinton accelerated the militarization of the so-called War on Drugs in Central and Latin America and supported privatization of U.S. military operations, giving lucrative contracts to Halliburton and other war contractors. Meanwhile, U.S. weapons sales to countries like Turkey and Indonesia aided genocidal campaigns against the Kurds and the East Timorese.

The prospect of Obama's foreign policy being, at least in part, an extension of the Clinton Doctrine is real. Even more disturbing, several of the individuals at the center of Obama's transition and emerging foreign policy teams were top players in creating and implementing foreign policies that would pave the way for projects eventually carried out under the Bush/Cheney administration. With their assistance, Obama has already charted out several hawkish stances. Among them:

  • His plan to escalate the war in Afghanistan;
  • An Iraq plan that could turn into a downsized and rebranded occupation that keeps U.S. forces in Iraq for the foreseeable future;
  • His labeling of Iran's Revolutionary Guard as a "terrorist organization;"
  • His pledge to use unilateral force inside of Pakistan to defend U.S. interests;
  • His position, presented before the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), that Jerusalem "must remain undivided" -- a remark that infuriated Palestinian officials and which he later attempted to reframe;
  • His plan to continue the War on Drugs, a backdoor U.S. counterinsurgency campaign in Central and Latin America;
  • His refusal to "rule out" using Blackwater and other armed private forces in U.S. war zones, despite previously introducing legislation to regulate these companies and bring them under U.S. law.
  •     Obama did not arrive at these positions in a vacuum. They were carefully crafted in consultation with his foreign policy team. While the verdict is still out on a few people, many members of his inner foreign policy circle -- including some who have received or are bound to receive Cabinet posts -- supported the invasion and occupation of Iraq. Some promoted the myth that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction. A few have worked with the neoconservative Project for the New American Century, whose radical agenda was adopted by the Bush/Cheney administration. And most have proven track records of supporting or implementing militaristic, offensive U.S. foreign policy. "After a masterful campaign, Barack Obama seems headed toward some fateful mistakes as he assembles his administration by heeding the advice of Washington's Democratic insider community, a collective group that represents little 'change you can believe in,'" notes veteran journalist Robert Parry, the former Associated Press and Newsweek reporter who broke many of the stories in the Iran-Contra scandal in the 1980s.

As news breaks and speculation abounds about cabinet appointments, here are 20 people to watch as Obama builds the team who will shape U.S. foreign policy for at least four years:

        Joe Biden

There was no stronger sign that Obama's foreign policy would follow the hawkish tradition of the Democratic foreign policy establishment than his selection of Sen. Joe Biden as his running mate. Much has been written on Biden's tenure as head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, but his role in the invasion and occupation of Iraq stands out. Biden is not just one more Democratic lawmaker who now calls his vote to authorize the use of force in Iraq "mistaken;" Biden was actually an important facilitator of the war.

In the summer of 2002, when the United States was "debating" a potential attack on Iraq, Biden presided over hearings whose ostensible purpose was to weigh all existing options. But instead of calling on experts whose testimony could challenge the case for war -- Iraq's alleged WMD possession and its supposed ties to al-Qaida -- Biden's hearings treated the invasion as a foregone conclusion. His refusal to call on two individuals in particular ensured that testimony that could have proven invaluable to an actual debate was never heard: Former Chief United Nations Weapons Inspector Scott Ritter and Hans von Sponeck, a 32-year veteran diplomat and the former head of the U.N.'s Iraq program.

Both men say they made it clear to Biden's office that they were ready and willing to testify; Ritter knew more about the dismantling of Iraq's WMD program than perhaps any other U.S. citizen and would have been in prime position to debunk the misinformation and outright lies being peddled by the White House. Meanwhile, von Sponeck had just returned from Iraq, where he had observed Ansar al Islam rebels in the north of Iraq -- the so-called al-Qaida connection -- and could have testified that, rather than colluding with Saddam's regime, they were in a battle against it. Moreover, he would have pointed out that they were operating in the U.S.-enforced safe haven of Iraqi Kurdistan. "Evidence of al-Qaida/lraq collaboration does not exist, neither in the training of operatives nor in support to Ansar-al-Islam," von Sponeck wrote in an Op-Ed published shortly before the July 2002 hearings. "The U.S. Department of Defense and the CIA know perfectly well that today's Iraq poses no threat to anyone in the region, let alone in the United States. To argue otherwise is dishonest."

With both men barred from testifying, rather than eliciting an array of informed opinions, Biden's committee whitewashed Bush's lies and helped lead the country to war. Biden himself promoted the administration's false claims that were used to justify the invasion of Iraq, declaring on the Senate floor, "[Saddam Hussein] possesses chemical and biological weapons and is seeking nuclear weapons."

With the war underway, Biden was then the genius who passionately promoted the ridiculous plan to partition Iraq into three areas based on religion and ethnicity, attempting to Balkanize one of the strongest Arab states in the world.

"He's a part of the old Democratic establishment," says retired Army Col. Ann Wright, the State Department diplomat who reopened the U.S. embassy in Kabul in 2002. Biden, she says, has "had a long history with foreign affairs, [but] it's not the type of foreign affairs that I want."

        Rahm Emanuel

Obama's appointment of Illinois Congressman Rahm Emanuel as Chief of Staff is a clear sign that Clinton-era neoliberal hawks will be well-represented at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. A former senior Clinton advisor, Emanuel is a hard-line supporter of Israel's "targeted assassination" policy and actually volunteered to work with the Israeli Army during the 1991 Gulf War. He is close to the right-wing Democratic Leadership Council and was the only member of the Illinois Democratic delegation in the Congress to vote for the invasion of Iraq. Unlike many of his colleagues, Emanuel still defends his vote. As chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in 2006, Emanuel promoted the campaigns of 22 candidates, only one of who supported a swift withdrawal from Iraq, and denied crucial Party funding to anti-war candidates. "As for Iraq policy, at the right time, we will have a position," he said in December 2005. As Philip Giraldi recently pointed out on Antiwar.com, Emanuel "advocates increasing the size of the U.S. Army by 100,000 soldiers and creating a domestic spying organization like Britain's MI5. More recently, he has supported mandatory paramilitary national service for all Americans between the ages of 18 and 25."

While Obama has at times been critical of Clinton-era free trade agreements, Emanuel was one of the key people in the Clinton White House who brokered the successful passage of NAFTA.

        Hillary Rodham Clinton

For all the buzz and speculation about the possibility that Sen. Clinton may be named Secretary of State, most media coverage has focused on her rivalry with Obama during the primary, along with the prospect of her husband having to face the intense personal, financial and political vetting process required to secure a job in the new administration. But the question of how Clinton would lead the operations at Foggy Bottom calls for scrutiny of her positions vis-a-vis Obama's stated foreign-policy goals.

Clinton was an ardent defender of her husband's economic and military war against Iraq throughout the 1990s, including the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, which ultimately laid the path for President George W. Bush's invasion. Later, as a U.S. senator, she not only voted to authorize the war, but aided the Bush administration's propaganda campaign in the lead-up to the invasion. "Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile-delivery capability and his nuclear program," Clinton said when rising to support the measure in October 2002. "He has also given aid, comfort and sanctuary to terrorists, including al-Qaida members ... I want to insure that Saddam Hussein makes no mistake about our national unity and for our support for the president's efforts to wage America's war against terrorists and weapons of mass destruction."

"The man who vowed to deliver us from 28 years of Bushes and Clintons has been stocking up on Clintonites," New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd recently wrote. "How, one may ask, can he put Hillary -- who voted to authorize the Iraq war without even reading the intelligence assessment -- in charge of patching up a foreign policy and a world riven by that war?"

Beyond Iraq, Clinton shocked many and sparked official protests by Tehran at the United Nations when asked during the presidential campaign what she would do as president if Iran attacked Israel with nuclear weapons. "I want the Iranians to know that if I'm the president, we will attack Iran," she declared. "In the next 10 years, during which they might foolishly consider launching an attack on Israel, we would be able to totally obliterate them."

Clinton has not shied away from supporting offensive foreign policy tactics in the past. Recalling her husband's weighing the decision of whether to attack Yugoslavia, she said in 1999, "I urged him to bomb. You cannot let this go on at the end of a century that has seen the major holocaust of our time. What do we have NATO for if not to defend our way of life?"

        Madeleine Albright

While Obama's house is flush with Clintonian officials like former Secretary of State Warren Christopher, Defense Secretary William Perry, Director of the State Department Office of Policy Planning Greg Craig (who was officially named Obama's White House Counsel) and Navy Secretary Richard Danzig, perhaps most influential is Madeleine Albright, Bill Clinton's former Secretary of State and U.N. ambassador. Albright recently served as a proxy for Obama, representing him at the G-20 summit earlier this month. Whether or not she is awarded an official role in the administration, Albright will be a major force in shaping Obama's foreign policy.

"It will take time to convince skeptics that the promotion of democracy is not a mask for imperialism or a recipe for the kind of chaos we have seen in the Persian Gulf," Albright recently wrote. "And it will take time to establish the right identity for America in a world that has grown suspicious of all who claim a monopoly on virtue and that has become reluctant to follow the lead of any one country."

Albright should know. She was one of the key architects in the dismantling of Yugoslavia during the 1990s. In the lead-up to the 1999 "Kosovo war," she oversaw the U.S. attempt to coerce the Yugoslav government to deny its own sovereignty in return for not being bombed. Albright demanded that the Yugoslav government sign a document that would have been unacceptable to any sovereign nation. Known as the Rambouillet Accord, it included a provision that would have guaranteed U.S. and NATO forces "free and unrestricted passage and unimpeded access throughout" all of Yugoslavia -- not just Kosovo -- while also seeking to immunize those occupation forces "from any form of arrest, investigation or detention by the authorities in [Yugoslavia]." Moreover, it would have granted the occupiers "the use of airports, roads, rails and ports without payment." Similar to Bush's Iraq plan years later, the Rambouillet Accord mandated that the economy of Kosovo "shall function in accordance with free-market principles."

When Yugoslavia refused to sign the document, Albright and others in the Clinton administration unleashed the 78-day NATO bombing of Serbia, which targeted civilian infrastructure. (Prior to the attack, Albright said the U.S. government felt "the Serbs need a little bombing.") She and the Clinton administration also supported the rise to power in Kosovo of a terrorist mafia that carried out its own ethnic-cleansing campaign against the province's minorities.

Perhaps Albright's most notorious moment came with her enthusiastic support of the economic war against the civilian population of Iraq. When confronted by Lesley Stahl of "60 Minutes" that the sanctions were responsible for the deaths of "a half-million children - more children than died in Hiroshima," Albright responded, "I think this is a very hard choice, but the price -- we think the price is worth it." (While defending the policy, Albright later called her choice of words "a terrible mistake, hasty, clumsy, and wrong.")

        Richard Holbrooke

Like Albright, Holbrooke will have major sway over U.S. policy, whether or not he gets an official job. A career diplomat since the Vietnam War, Holbrooke's most recent government post was as President Clinton's ambassador to the U.N. Among the many violent policies he helped implement and enforce was the U.S.-backed Indonesian genocide in East Timor. Holbrooke was an Assistant Secretary of State in the late 1970s at the height of the slaughter and was the point man on East Timor for the Carter Administration.

According to Brad Simpson, director of the Indonesia and East Timor Documentation Project at the National Security Archive at George Washington University, "It was Holbrooke and Zbigniew Brzezinski [another top Obama advisor], both now leading lights in the Democratic Party, who played point in trying to frustrate the efforts of congressional human-rights activists to try and condition or stop U.S. military assistance to Indonesia, and in fact accelerated the flow of weapons to Indonesia at the height of the genocide."

Holbrooke, too, was a major player in the dismantling of Yugoslavia and praised the bombing of Serb Television, which killed 16 media workers, as a significant victory. (The man who ordered that bombing, now-retired Army Gen. Wesley Clark, is another Obama foreign policy insider who could end up in his cabinet. While Clark is known for being relatively progressive on social issues, as Supreme Allied Commander of NATO, he ordered bombings and attacks that Amnesty International labeled war crimes.)

Like many in Obama's foreign policy circle, Holbrooke also supported the Iraq war. In early 2003, shortly after then-Secretary of State Colin Powell's speech to the UN, where he presented the administration's fraud-laden case for war to the UN (a speech Powell has since called a "blot" on his reputation), Holbrooke said: "It was a masterful job of diplomacy by Colin Powell and his colleagues, and it does not require a second vote to go to war. Saddam is the most dangerous government leader in the world today, he poses a threat to the region, he could pose a larger threat if he got weapons of mass destruction deployed, and we have a legitimate right to take action."

        Dennis Ross

Middle East envoy for both George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton, Ross was one of the primary authors of Obama's aforementioned speech before AIPAC this summer. He cut his teeth working under famed neoconservative Paul Wolfowitz at the Pentagon in the 1970s and worked closely with the Project for the New American Century. Ross has been a staunch supporter of Israel and has fanned the flames for a more hostile stance toward Iran. As the lead U.S. negotiator between Israel and numerous Arab nations under Clinton, Ross' team acted, in the words of one U.S. official who worked under him, as "Israel's lawyer."

"The 'no surprises' policy, under which we had to run everything by Israel first, stripped our policy of the independence and flexibility required for serious peacemaking," wrote U.S. diplomat Aaron David Miller in 2005. "If we couldn't put proposals on the table without checking with the Israelis first, and refused to push back when they said no, how effective could our mediation be? Far too often, particularly when it came to Israeli-Palestinian diplomacy, our departure point was not what was needed to reach an agreement acceptable to both sides but what would pass with only one -- Israel." After the Clinton White House, Ross worked for the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, a hawkish pro-Israel think tank, and for FOX News, where he repeatedly pressed for war against Iraq.

        Martin Indyk

Founder of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, Indyk spent years working for AIPAC and served as Clinton's ambassador to Israel and Assistant Secretary of State for Near East Affairs, while also playing a major role in developing U.S. policy toward Iraq and Iran. In addition to his work for the U.S. government, he has worked for the Israeli government and with PNAC.

"Barack Obama has painted himself into a corner by appealing to the most hard-line, pro-Israel elements in this country," Ali Abunimah, founder of ElectronicInifada.net, recently told Amy Goodman of Democracy Now!, describing Indyk and Dennis Ross as "two of the most pro-Israel officials from the Clinton era, who are totally distrusted by Palestinians and others across the Middle East, because they're seen as lifelong advocates for Israeli positions."

        Anthony Lake

Clinton's former National Security Advisor was an early supporter of Obama and one of the few top Clintonites to initially back the president-elect. Lake began his foreign policy work in the U.S. Foreign Service during Vietnam, working with Henry Kissinger on the "September Group," a secret team tasked with developing a military strategy to deliver a "savage, decisive blow against North Vietnam."

Decades later, after working for various administrations, Lake "was the main force behind the U.S. invasion of Haiti in the mid-Clinton years," according to veteran journalist Allan Nairn, whose groundbreaking reporting revealed U.S. support for Haitian death squads in the 1990s. "They brought back Aristide essentially in political chains, pledged to support a World Bank/IMF overhaul of the economy, which resulted in an increase in malnutrition deaths among Haitians, and set the stage for the current ongoing political disaster in Haiti." Clinton nominated Lake as CIA Director, but he failed to win Senate confirmation.

        Lee Hamilton

Hamilton is a former chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and was co-chairman of both the Iraq Study Group and 9/11 Commission. Robert Parry, who has covered Hamilton's career extensively, recently ran a piece on Consortium News that characterized him this way: "Whenever the Republicans have a touchy national-security scandal to put to rest, their favorite Democratic investigator is Lee Hamilton. ... Hamilton's carefully honed skill for balancing truth against political comity has elevated him to the status of a Washington Wise Man."

        Susan Rice

Former Assistant Secretary of Sate Susan Rice, who served on Bill Clinton's National Security Council, is a potential candidate for the post of ambassador to the U.N. or as a deputy national security advisor. She, too, promoted the myth that Saddam had WMDs. "It's clear that Iraq poses a major threat," she said in 2002. "It's clear that its weapons of mass destruction need to be dealt with forcefully, and that's the path we're on." (After the invasion, discussing Saddam's alleged possession of WMDs, she said, "I don't think many informed people doubted that.")

Rice has also been a passionate advocate for a U.S. military attack against Sudan over the Darfur crisis. In an op-ed co-authored with Anthony Lake, she wrote, "The United States, preferably with NATO involvement and African political support, would strike Sudanese airfields, aircraft and other military assets. It could blockade Port Sudan, through which Sudan's oil exports flow. Then U.N. troops would deploy -- by force, if necessary, with U.S. and NATO backing."

        John Brennan

A longtime CIA official and former head of the National Counterterrorism Center, Brennan is one of the coordinators of Obama's intelligence transition team and a top contender for either CIA Director or Director of National Intelligence. He was also recently described by Glenn Greenwald as "an ardent supporter of torture and one of the most emphatic advocates of FISA expansions and telecom immunity." While claiming to oppose waterboarding, labeling it "inconsistent with American values" and "something that should be prohibited," Brennan has simultaneously praised the results achieved by "enhanced interrogation" techniques. "There has been a lot of information that has come out from these interrogation procedures that the agency has, in fact, used against the real hard-core terrorists," Brennan said in a 2007 interview. "It has saved lives. And let's not forget, these are hardened terrorists who have been responsible for 9/11, who have shown no remorse at all for the death of 3,000 innocents."

Brennan has described the CIA's extraordinary rendition program -- the government-run kidnap-and-torture program enacted under Clinton -- as an absolutely vital tool. "I have been intimately familiar now over the past decade with the cases of rendition that the U.S. Government has been involved in," he said in a December 2005 interview. "And I can say without a doubt that it has been very successful as far as producing intelligence that has saved lives."

Brennan is currently the head of Analysis Corporation, a private intelligence company that was recently implicated in the breach of Obama and Sen. John McCain's passport records. He is also the current chairman of the Intelligence and National Security Alliance (INSA), a trade association of private intelligence contractors who have dramatically increased their role in sensitive U.S. national security operations. (Current Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell is former chairman of the INSA.)

        Jami Miscik

Miscik, who works alongside Brennan on Obama's transitional team, was the CIA's Deputy Director for Intelligence in the run-up to the Iraq war. She was one of the key officials responsible for sidelining intel that contradicted the official line on WMD, while promoting intel that backed it up.

"When the administration insisted on an intelligence assessment of Saddam Hussein's relationship to al-Qaida, Miscik blocked the skeptics (who were later vindicated) within the CIA's Mideast analytical directorate and instructed the less-skeptical counterterrorism analysts to 'stretch to the maximum the evidence you had,' " journalist Spencer Ackerman recently wrote in the Washington Independent. "It's hard to think of a more egregious case of sacrificing sound intelligence analysis in order to accommodate the strategic fantasies of an administration. ... The idea that Miscik is helping staff Obama's top intelligence picks is most certainly not change we can believe in." What's more, she went on to a lucrative post as the Global Head of Sovereign Risk for the now-bankrupt Lehman Brothers.

        John Kerry and Bill Richardson

Both Sen. Kerry and Gov. Richardson have been identified as possible contenders for Secretary of State. While neither is likely to be as hawkish as Hillary Clinton, both have taken pro-war positions. Kerry promoted the WMD lie and voted to invade Iraq. "Why is Saddam Hussein attempting to develop nuclear weapons when most nations don't even try?" Kerry asked on the Senate floor in October 2002. "According to intelligence, Iraq has chemical and biological weapons ... Iraq is developing unmanned aerial vehicles capable of delivering chemical and biological warfare agents."

Richardson, whose Iraq plan during his 2008 presidential campaign was more progressive and far-reaching than Obama's, served as Bill Clinton's ambassador to the UN. In this capacity, he supported Clinton's December 1998 bombing of Baghdad and the U.S.-led sanctions against Iraq. "We think this man is a threat to the international community, and he threatens a lot of the neighbors in his region and future generations there with anthrax and VX," Richardson told an interviewer in February 1998.

While Clinton's Secretary of Energy, Richardson publicly named Wen Ho Lee, a scientist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, as a target in an espionage investigation. Lee was accused of passing nuclear secrets to the Chinese government. Lee was later cleared of those charges and won a settlement against the U.S. government.

        Robert Gates

Washington consensus is that Obama will likely keep Robert Gates, George W. Bush's Defense Secretary, as his own Secretary of Defense. While Gates has occasionally proved to be a stark contrast to former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, he would hardly represent a break from the policies of the Bush administration. Quite the opposite; according to the Washington Post, in the interest of a "smooth transition," Gates "has ordered hundreds of political appointees at the Pentagon canvassed to see whether they wish to stay on in the new administration, has streamlined policy briefings and has set up suites for President-elect Barack Obama's transition team just down the hall from his own E-ring office." The Post reports that Gates could stay on for a brief period and then be replaced by Richard Danzig, who was Clinton's Secretary of the Navy. Other names currently being tossed around are Democratic Sen. Jack Reed, Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel (a critic of the Iraq occupation) and Republican Sen. Richard Lugar, who served alongside Biden on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

        Ivo H. Daalder

Daalder was National Security Council Director for European Affairs under President Clinton. Like other Obama advisors, he has worked with the Project for the New American Century and signed a 2005 letter from PNAC to Congressional leaders, calling for an increase in U.S. ground troops in Iraq and beyond.

        Sarah Sewall

Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Peacekeeping and Humanitarian Assistance during the Clinton administration, Sewall served as a top advisor to Obama during the campaign and is almost certain to be selected for a post in his administration. In 2007, Sewall worked with the U.S. military and Army Gen. David Petraeus, writing the introduction to the University of Chicago edition of the Army/Marine Corps Counterinsurgency Field Manual. She was criticized for this collaboration by Tom Hayden, who wrote, "the Petraeus plan draws intellectual legitimacy from Harvard's Carr Center for Human Rights Policy, whose director, Sarah Sewall, proudly embraces an 'unprecedented collaboration [as] a human rights center partnered with the armed forces.'"

"Humanitarians often avoid wading into the conduct of war for fear of becoming complicit in its purpose," she wrote in the introduction. "'The field manual requires engagement precisely from those who fear that its words lack meaning."

        Michele Flournoy

Flournoy and former Clinton Deputy Defense Secretary John White are co-heading Obama's defense transition team. Flournoy was a senior Clinton appointee at the Pentagon. She currently runs the Center for a New American Security, a center-right think-tank. There is speculation that Obama could eventually name her as the first woman to serve as defense secretary. As the Wall Street Journal recently reported: "While at CNAS, Flournoy helped to write a report that called for reducing the open-ended American military commitment in Iraq and replacing it with a policy of 'conditional engagement' there. Significantly, the paper rejected the idea of withdrawing troops according to the sort of a fixed timeline that Obama espoused during the presidential campaign. Obama has in recent weeks signaled that he was willing to shelve the idea, bringing him more in line with Flournoy's thinking." Flournoy has also worked with the neoconservative Project for the New American Century.

        Wendy Sherman and Tom Donilon

Currently employed at Madeline Albright's consulting firm, the Albright Group, Sherman worked under Albright at the State Department, coordinating U.S. policy on North Korea. She is now coordinating the State Department transition team for Obama. Tom Donilon, her co-coordinator, was Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs and Chief of Staff at the State Department under Clinton. Interestingly, Sherman and Donilon both have ties to Fannie Mae that didn't make it onto their official bios on Obama's change.gov website. "Donilon was Fannie's general counsel and executive vice president for law and policy from 1999 until the spring of 2005, a period during which the company was rocked by accounting problems," reports the Wall Street Journal.

        ***

While many of the figures at the center of Obama's foreign policy team are well-known, two of its most important members have never held national elected office or a high-profile government position. While they cannot be characterized as Clinton-era hawks, it will be important to watch Denis McDonough and Mark Lippert, co-coordinators of the Obama foreign policy team. From 2000 to 2005, McDonough served as foreign policy advisor to Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle and worked extensively on the use-of-force authorizations for the attacks on Afghanistan and Iraq, both of which Daschle supported. From 1996 to 1999, McDonough was a professional staff member of the House International Relations Committee during the debate over the bombing of Yugoslavia. More recently, he was at the Center for American Progress working under John Podesta, Clinton's former chief of staff and the current head of the Obama transition.

Mark Lippert is a close personal friend of Obama's. He has worked for Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy, as well as the Senate Appropriations Committee and the Democratic Policy Committee. He is a lieutenant in the Navy Reserve and spent a year in Iraq working intelligence for the Navy SEALs. "According to those who've worked closely with Lippert," Robert Dreyfuss recently wrote in The Nation, "he is a conservative, cautious centrist who often pulled Obama to the right on Iraq, Iran and the Middle East and who has been a consistent advocate for increased military spending. 'Even before Obama announced for the presidency, Lippert wanted Obama to be seen as tough on Iran,' says a lobbyist who's worked the Iran issue on Capitol Hill, 'He's clearly more hawkish than the senator.' "

        ***

Barack Obama campaigned on a pledge to bring change to Washington. "I don't want to just end the war," he said early this year. "I want to end the mindset that got us into war." That is going to be very difficult if Obama employs a foreign policy team that was central to creating that mindset, before and during the presidency of George W. Bush.

"Twenty-three senators and 133 House members who voted against the war -- and countless other notable individuals who spoke out against it and the dubious claims leading to war -- are apparently not even being considered for these crucial positions," observes Sam Husseini of the Institute for Public Accuracy. This includes dozens of former military and intelligence officials who spoke out forcefully against the war and continue to oppose militaristic policy, as well as credible national security experts who have articulated their visions for a foreign policy based on justice.

Obama does have a chance to change the mindset that got us into war. More significantly, he has a popular mandate to forcefully challenge the militaristic, hawkish tradition of modern U.S. foreign policy. But that work would begin by bringing on board people who would challenge this tradition, not those who have been complicit in creating it and are bound to continue advancing it.

    Perkins on conservatism
icon Download | Play   icon Download | Play

Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council was out repeating the nonsensical yet much-repeated "America is a center-right country" meme for CNN's Lou Dobbs program Wednesday, and he added something of a new twist:

I think there is a strategy that's going to be going forward for the conservative movement. I think many in the conservative movement, if you will, believe that the Republican Party took over the conservative movement and kind of ran it off the road. And, uh, conservatives are ready to take back control of the conservative movement, and if the Republican Party wants to be a governing party, as it has been in the past, then it's going to have to return to those conservative principles.

I think most people -- Republicans like Kathleen Parker included -- see it the other way around: the Republican Party was taken over by the conservative movement. One upon a time, the GOP actually was home to genuine moderates like Lowell Weicker and John Chafee; but ever since Ronald Reagan's ascension in the late 1970s, it gradually become a wholly owned subsidiary of the conservative movement.

The New York Times Discovers The Magical Land of Chicago from Chicagoist

Have you ever heard a song by a band and totally been turned on to that band, rushing out to buy their record, listening to it, and then excitedly telling your friend all about your "discovery", saying, "Hey, have you ever heard of this band called The Rolling Stones??? They ROCK!" only to have your heart crushed when your friend tells you that band's old news? (Tankboy has to do it to me all the time.) We hate to be "that friend," but...

Photo by The New No. 2

Yesterday, the New York Times' Jeff Zeleny looked at the "renaissance" of Chicago in his cheekily titled article, "A New Wind Is Blowing in Chicago." One doesn't necessarily envision Zeleny and his colleagues (Maureen Dowd, perhaps?) sitting around a computer looking at pictures of Chicago with wonder and saying, "They have...buildings! And...parks!" but judging from the article it feels like they haven't actually stepped foot in Chicago in quite a while. It's all O'Hare, Obama, and Oprah to these people, isn't it?

Now, we're proud to call this city home and marvel at its wonder all the time, but things ain't all grand; our response to a lot of their points is, "Yes, but..." For instance, the article gushes about the Donald's new tower going up downtown -

A spire is finally poised to be placed atop the Trump Tower here, bringing the skyscraper to 1,361 feet, the tallest American building since the Sears Tower was built three decades ago.
    - but doesn't mention the financial crapper Trump's dealing with to get things going, nor does it mention the big hole in the ground that would be the Chicago Spire. Fortunately, the Reader's Ben Joravsky has a nice post doing just that.

So, instead of piling on, I'm gonna take the Positive Patty view here. Yes, Obama's election has thrust us back in to the national spotlight, but it's not like we haven't been rocking all along.

Engineering Our Own Extinction? GE Corn Linked To Increasing Infertility from Firedoglake

This is truly the stuff of nightmares.  As someone who lived through years of infertility and miscarriage misery, I can't imagine being in the shoes of a desperate-to-be-mother who found out that an ingredient in our food -- unmarked because of government bowing to the lobbying interests of farming giants like Monsanto who don't want you knowing that there is frankenfood in your meal -- was the cause?

    Via Gourmet:

...Yet none of our regulatory agencies required long-term animal feeding studies before allowing all that test-tube corn to enter our food supply, according to the Center for Food Safety, and much of the short-term research that has been done was sponsored by the biotech companies that stood to profit from GE crops.

Which is why it was particularly chilling late last week to read the results of an experiment that was both long term and not conducted under the auspices of a big chemical company.

It's official: 'center-right nation' is now right-wingers' favorite meme from Crooks and Liars

    Center-right nation_d9685.JPG

If anyone were betting on it, I would happily wager that the right-wing talking point that "this is still a center-right nation" was being ginned up and distributed to every conservative talking head on the planet within 24 hours of Barack Obama's election victory, if not before.

I mean, it's coming out of the mouths of nearly every single right-wing pundit who's managed airtime since Nov. 5. It started the next day, and has only gained volume since.

And of course, it's so risibly false that it really tells us much more about conservatives and their grip on reality than anything else.

    Three More Banks Fail

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal regulators on Friday shut down two big thrifts based in Southern California, saying they fell victim to the acute distress in the housing market in that state.

The failures of Downey Savings and Loan Association, based in Newport Beach, and PFF Bank & Trust of Pomona brought the number of U.S. bank failures this year to 22.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. was appointed receiver of the two thrifts. U.S. Bank, based in Minneapolis, acquired all the deposits of both.

Downey, the 23rd-largest U.S. savings and loan, had assets of $12.8 billion and deposits of $9.7 billion as of Sept. 30. PFF, the 38th-largest, had assets of $3.7 billion and $2.4 billion in deposits.

Also Friday, Georgia regulators shut down The Community Bank, a small bank in Loganville, Ga. The FDIC was made receiver of the bank, which had $681 million in assets and $611.4 million in deposits as of Oct. 17. The FDIC said all the bank's deposits and about $84.4 million of its assets will be acquired by Bank of Essex, of Tappahannock, Va. Its four branches will reopen Monday as offices of Bank of Essex.

Dept. of Human Resources: The Risk Pool: The New Yorker:

"America's private pension system is now in crisis. Over the past few years, American taxpayers have been put at risk of assuming tens of billions of dollars of pension liabilities from once profitable companies. Hundreds of thousands of retired steelworkers and airline employees have seen health-care benefits that were promised to them by their employers vanish. General Motors, the country's largest automaker, is between forty and fifty billion dollars behind in the money it needs to fulfill its health-care and pension promises.  This crisis is sometimes portrayed as the result of corporate America's excessive generosity in making promises to its workers. But when it comes to retirement, health, disability, and unemployment benefits there is nothing exceptional about the United States: it is average among industrialized countries—more generous than Australia, Canada, Ireland, and Italy, just behind Finland and the United Kingdom, and on a par with the Netherlands and Denmark. The difference is that in most countries the government, or large groups of companies, provides pensions and health insurance. The United States, by contrast, has over the past fifty years followed the lead of Charlie Wilson and the bosses of Toledo and made individual companies responsible for the care of their retirees. It is this fact, as much as any other, that explains the current crisis. In 1950, Charlie Wilson was wrong, and Walter Reuther was right."

A Florida teenager apparently committed suicide with a lethal cocktail of pills in front of his webcam as others watched it live on the Internet, authorities and local media said Saturday.

Abraham Biggs, 19, of Pembroke Pines, near Miami, took a mix of three drugs Wednesday while he was online with other young people, Broward county authorities said.

They told AFP it was not clear who may have watched the young man die.

Biggs "died in front of his webcam and it was broadcast, but I cannot give more information. We have an investigation in place," said Sergeant John Gazzano of the Broward County Police.

The suicide video first appeared live on Justin.tv, then was posted to other sites such as YouTube.com, The Miami Herald reported. Both have since removed the clip.

"It's unimaginable," Abraham Biggs Sr., the youngster's father was quoted as saying Friday outside his home. "I did everything I could. I'm sorry it wasn't enough."

Washington - US president-elect Barack Obama announced Saturday that he had ordered his economic advisers to produce an economic recovery plan to create 2.5 million new jobs over the next two years.

"We'll be working out the details in the weeks ahead, but it will be a two-year, nationwide effort to jumpstart job creation in America and lay the foundation for a strong and growing economy," Obama said in his weekly radio address.

Obama, who has vowed to make the economy his priority when he takes office from President George W. Bush in January, said the effort should produce 2.5 million new jobs by January of 2011 and lay the foundation of the country's economic recovery.

How the Rich Are Destroying the Earth

There is an emergency. In less than a decade we will have to change course, but there are a few major obstacles blocking the way.

The following is reprinted from the new book How the Rich Are Destroying the Earth by Herve Kempf and published by Chelsea Green.

There is an emergency. In less than a decade we will have to change course -- assuming the collapse of the U.S. economy or the explosion of the Middle East does not impose a change through chaos. To confront the emergency, we must understand the objective: to achieve a sober society; to plot out the way there; to accomplish this transformation equitably, by first making those with the most carry the burden within and between societies; to take inspiration from collective values ascribed to here in France by our nation's motto: "Liberty, ecology, fraternity."

What are the main obstacles that block the way?

First of all, received wisdom -- prejudices really -- so loaded that they orient collective action without anyone really thinking about them. The most powerful of these preconceived ideas is the belief in growth as the sole means of resolving social problems. That position is powerfully defended even as it is contradicted by the facts. And it is always defended by putting ecology aside because the zealots know that growth is incapable of responding to the environmental issue.

More Obama Appointment News from Open Left

I really don't want to be pessimistic about the new Obama administration. Rather, I much preferred my optimistic mood from last night, discussing how the House seems to be moving in a more progressive direction, and how cutting military spending was a real possibility over the next couple of years. That felt good, and I want to keep feeling that way.

However, the apparent leading contenders for several top Obama administration positions continue to worry me. For example, Timothy Geithner, reported to be Obama's pick for Secretary of the Treasury, actually helped Paulson with the bailout:

Geithner was also closely involved in the design and execution of the Bush administration's $700bn banking bailout, which has proven less than popular with Congress and could become an issue during his confirmation hearing.

Who is Tim Geithner? from The Washington Independent by Matthew DeLong

For those of us who are still having a hard time wrapping our brainpans around what exactly credit default swaps are and why they made the economy go boom, we may need some help understanding the meaning of President-elect Barack Obama's reported decision to appoint Timothy Geithner to what will undoubtedly be one of the most important and high-profile positions in the new administration, treasury secretary.

Fortunately, Portfolio's Gary Weiss published a very informative 5,000-word profile of Geithner, who currently serves as president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, in May — after the New York Fed-orchestrated rescue of investment bank Bear Stearns by JPMorgan Chase, in which Geithner was a central figure, but before the mid-September disintegration of much of Wall Street.

The piece, which ranges from critical to sympathetic, paints a nuanced picture of Geithner's meteoric career. He has a diverse roster of boosters, including former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, whose law firm was an early employer of Geithner, and former Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan (granted, neither of these will rock the world of change-hungry progressives) as well as former Clinton Treasury Secretary Larry Summers.

First, the good: Geithner is likely to bring an eye for reform to the new job.

REPORT: Bush’s Backward Sprint To The Finish from Think Progress by Think Progress

    bushsprintfinish11.jpg

In its "sprint to the finish," the Bush administration is working tirelessly to enact or alter a wide array of federal regulations that would weaken government rules protecting consumers, workers, and the environment.

As Rep. Nick Rahall (D-WV), chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee, told the Wall Street Journal, "This administration will stop at nothing to jam through as many reckless proposals as they can before the clock runs out."

The Wonk Room and ThinkProgress are keeping a close eye on Bush's Backward Sprint to the Finish, and have compiled a document to keep tabs on both the proposed and already enacted changes. Here are some examples:

Report sees 'end of US power' before 2025 from Raw Story Breaking News

    • US intelligence: 'We can no longer call shots alone'
    • European Union will be 'hobbled giant' by 2025
    • Triumph of western democracy not certain

The United States' leading intelligence organisation has warned that the world is entering an increasingly unstable and unpredictable period in which the advance of western-style democracy is no longer assured, and some states are in danger of being "taken over and run by criminal networks".

The global trends review, produced by the National Intelligence Council (NIC) every four years, represents sobering reading in Barack Obama's intray as he prepares to take office in January. The country he inherits, the report warns, will no longer be able to "call the shots" alone, as its power over an increasingly multipolar world begins to wane.

Looking ahead to 2025, the NIC (which coordinates analysis from all the US intelligence agencies), foresees a fragmented world, where conflict over scarce resources is on the rise, poorly contained by "ramshackle" international institutions, while nuclear proliferation, particularly in the Middle East, and even nuclear conflict grow more likely.

"Global Trends 2025: A World Transformed" warns that the spread of western democratic capitalism cannot be taken for granted, as it was by George Bush and America's neoconservatives.

Important US research to reduce HIV infection may have been prevented in recent years because scientists have censored their funding requests in response to political controversy, according to a study published on Tuesday.

Obama to Usher In Major Shift in Trade Policy from Truthout - All Articles

Waxman Ushers in New Era from The Washington Independent by Mike Lillis

House Democrats Thursday morning took the remarkable step of ousting Congress's longest-serving member as head of the powerful energy panel. They replaced Dingell with the more liberal Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Cal.), whose energy plans are more in-line with those of President-elect Barack Obama.

The vote — 137 to 122 — marked a stunning defeat for the party's seniority system.

Environmentalists, though, are thrilled. For decades, Dingell has fought successfully against efforts to adopt stricter emissions rules and force Detroit's automakers in the direction of greater fuel-efficiency. With the arrival of an Obama administration next year, many climate-change groups had wondered how the new president would sneak his ambitious energy plans past the powerful head of the energy panel. Now he won't have to. Waxman, a fiery environmentalist who has butted heads with Dingell on these issues, is seen to symbolize the end of Dingell's obstructionism.

"It's a whole new world," said Daniel Becker, director of the Safe Climate Campaign, a group formed to fight climate change. "We can now redirect our global-warming policies in ways that otherwise weren't possible."

Bush Pushing Changes To Endangered Species Act Now, To Make It More Difficult For Obama To Renege from Crooks and Liars

    democracy Now!:

As the media focuses on President-elect Obama and the transition of power here in Washington, the Bush administration is quietly trying to push through a wide array of federal regulations before President Bush leaves office in January.

Up to ninety proposed regulations could be finalized by the outgoing administration, many of which would weaken government rules aimed at protecting consumers and the environment. According to the Washington Post, the new rules would be among the most controversial deregulatory steps of the Bush era. They include rules that could weaken workplace safety protections, allow local police to spy in the so-called "war on terror" and make it easier for federal agencies to ignore the Endangered Species Act.

While it's nothing new for outgoing administrations to try and enact these so-called "midnight regulations," the Bush administration has accelerated the process to ensure the changes it wants will be finalized by November 22nd. That's sixty days before the next administration takes control. Most federal rules go into effect sixty days after they've been finalized, and it would be a major bureaucratic undertaking for the Obama administration to reverse federal rules already in effect.

Unbridled Speculation from The Jed Report

    Unbridled Speculation

    So here's the news:

Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano (D), a border-state governor whose handling of immigration and homeland security issues brought her accolades from fellow governors, is President-elect Barack Obama's choice to serve as secretary of homeland security, Democratic sources said yesterday.

    Now, here's the tea leaves:

    1. Napolitano would beat McCain in 2010.
    2. Obama met with McCain on Monday.
    3. McCain indicated he plans to run for re-election yesteday.
    4. And now Napolitano is apparently joining the cabinet -- taking her out of 2010 contention, making McCain's path easier.

And here's my speculation: on Monday, Obama and McCain may have struck some sort of a deal involving McCain offering his support on a key legislative initiative in exchange for Obama taking Napalitano out of the running for McCain's senate seat. The most likely policy area for such a deal would be energy. Despite his election year conversion to drill, drill, drill, McCain has been among the more progressive GOPers on energy policy, so it's possible that he actually would be in favor of geting something done.

As you can see, it's a letter that starts out by teeing off the emerging right-wing meme attempting to blame Barack Obama for the current economic meltdown, mostly by noting that Wall Street firms donated more heavily to Obama's campaign than to John McCain's:

If you've been wondering why the financial industry is in meltdown -- and taking your 401(k) or investment portfolio down with it -- now you know.

Let's face it: The former frat boys who populate Wall Street today understand economics as well as the pinko professors whose courses they snored through.

1,836 and 705 - Lieberman Still Silent on Katrina from Firedoglake

via http://oxdown.firedoglake.com/diary/1914 - very powerful stuff - please head over to read

    helicopter.thumbnail.jpg

It's about 1,836 confirmed dead, 705 missing, and the ten of thousands still displaced years after Hurricane Katrina.

It's about the ethnic cleansing of one of America's oldest cities, the purging by gross negligence of one of our cultural treasures.

That's why I'm still angry at Sen. Joe Lieberman for his dismal record under the 109th and 110th Congresses, and why I am still fuming that he retained his chairmanship of the Governmental Affairs Committee under the next session of Congress.

There are critics who say that Lieberman is a problem with which the people of Connecticut will deal in the future when his seat is up for re-election.

Not so, or at least Lieberman's seat in the Senate is a different issue, and one I do truly hope that Connecticut's citizens will get right this time.

But the chairmanship of the Governmental Affairs committee is a matter for the entire nation to address, on behalf of the 1,836 dead and 705 missing and many more disenfranchised in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

The dead and missing have lost their voice, and we owe it to them to replace him with an effective chair who will not only investigate why the levees failed, why the federal government responded in advance, during and after the storm so poorly.

And we, the living, owe it to ourselves that a Senate committee chair not fail to do their job ever again.

It's not about revenge or retribution, as others have labeled the anger many progressives feel about Lieberman. It's about doing the job one's agreed to do, or getting replaced for failing it. It's about getting to the bottom of unnecessary loss of American lives, and making sure that the miseries that felled them do not happen again.

And I'm not going to forget as time goes by that Lieberman has failed those 1,836 and 705 every day he does not conduct a hearing on their behalf. Nor am I going to forget that he fails every damned day he does not conduct a hearing on our behalf to prevent such losses from happening again.

How Rahm got rich from Politico Top Stories by media@politico.com

Incoming White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel's career as an investment banker was short but, oh, so sweet. Emanuel left the Clinton White House in 1998 as a senior adviser on a government salary. By the time he won election to the House in 2002, he had earned an astonishing $16 million.

    How did he do it?

Partly, it was simple luck: Emanuel dipped quickly into the world of investment banking in time to catch the tail end of the 1990s boom economy as a Chicago-based managing director at Wasserstein Perella & Co., where he worked from 1999 to 2002. While he was there, the firm was sold to the German Dresdner Bank for $1.37 billion in stock, netting Emanuel much of his Wall Street windfall.

Shorter Mitt: Let the Auto Retirees Starve!!! from Emptywheel

Boy. Mitt Romney let loose one festival of stupid on the NYT op-ed page today. He writes an entire op-ed making prescriptions for the auto industry. But in the whole op-ed, there are just two suggestions that aren't already being implemented: The first suggestion? Find some way to renege on the pension promises the auto companies have made to retirees:

Furthermore, retiree benefits must be reduced so that the total burden per auto for domestic makers is not higher than that of foreign producers.

Unlike that recommendation, his second recommendation is very sound.

The need for collaboration will mean accepting sanity in salaries and perks. At American Motors, my dad cut his pay and that of his executive team, he bought stock in the company, and he went out to factories to talk to workers directly. Get rid of the planes, the executive dining rooms — all the symbols that breed resentment among the hundreds of thousands who will also be sacrificing to keep the companies afloat.

Who invoked September 11, explicitly referencing "the World Trade Center aflame," in calling for the firing of any "petty bureaucrat" who might suggest that proper procedures be followed and that the separation of powers be respected?

Asshole: Rush Limbaugh attacks pensions and the American Dream: You should work till you die from Crooks and Liars

The anti-union movement is on, and it all is centered around the automotive industry's quest for a rescue package/loan from the government. Limbaugh leads the charge in his Monday, Nov. 17 broadcast.

As the clip unfolds it appears that his own boss was trying to get him to change the topic. A caller who self-identifies as a Republican tries to shoot down some of the myths of the UAW that Limbaugh pushes on his flock on a daily basis. When asked about working past 67, he spins it by saying you shouldn't retire at 55.

Global warming foe ousted from post from Raw Story Breaking News

Automakers' closest friend kicked out of chairmanship

It's the end of an era -- Michigan Democrat John Dingell has been officially toppled from his post as head of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

In a secret ballot, Dingell was voted out by the Democrats 137-122 and replaced with Rep. Henry Waxman, a notable critic and aggressive investigator of the Bush Administration as chairman of the House Oversight Committee.

The vote is a victory for environmentalists and a huge new blow for the US auto industry. Dingell was one of the auto industry's biggest supporters -- his wife Debbie is a lobbyist for General Motors and is a descendant of the founding family -- and a consistent for of tighter fuel efficiency [CAFE] standards for automobiles. Dingell and his wife are pictured above right.

In effect, Dingell was probably the biggest Democratic opponent to efforts to tighten fuel economy standards as a means of combating now accepted global warming concerns.

Obama Selects Daschle to Head HHS from Capital Eye

Daschle.jpgBy selecting former Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) to head the Health and Human Services Department, Barack Obama is tapping the expertise of a man whose political campaigns in the public sector and salary in the private sector have been paid, in part, by the health care industry.

During his congressional career, which ended in 2004 when Republican John Thune unseated him, Daschle received at least $824,300 from health professionals, making the group his sixth most generous donor. The health sector as a whole contributed more than $1.5 million to him. He also collected $3.2 million from lawyers, many of whom were likely trial lawyers with a stake in health insurance issues. During his last term in the Senate, Daschle brought in more money from nurses ($18,950) and chiropractors ($20,900) than all but three other senators. He was the No. 3 recipient from hospitals and nursing homes ($134,640).

After his loss in the Senate, Daschle took a position as public policy adviser for law and lobbying firm Alston & Bird. He is not registered to lobby, but the firm's website says Daschle advises clients on health care, trade, taxes and financial services. The firm's lobbying clients include pharmaceutical company Roche (which has paid $90,000 for Alston & Bird's services in 2008), Mylan Laboratories (which has paid $150,000), Lifescan (which paid $90,000) and Caremark Rx (which paid $170,000). So far this year, Alston & Bird's lobbying clients have paid $5.9 million for the firm's services.

Thomas Crapper: Separating Truth from Crap from mental_floss Blog

Thomas_Crapper.jpgOne of the most popular sanitation-related misconceptions out there is that an Englishman named Thomas Crapper invented the flush toilet. It isn't true. In fact, early versions of flush toilet sanitation systems have been discovered as far back as the 26th century BC: cities in the Indus Valley Civilization, located in modern-day Pakistan, had toilets in many households. They came into widespread use in Europe during the 19th century, partly in response to the increasing stink pervading the city of London — horse droppings, overflowing cesspits and garbage clogged the streets. There was also a misguided theory of disease transmission — the "miasma theory" — which held that inhaling bad smells led to sickness, so redirecting them into a flush toilet seemed like a grand idea.

Bush Legacy Watch: Iran Acquires Enough Uranium For Single Nuclear Bomb from Think Progress

Our guest blogger is Andy Grotto, a Senior National Security Analyst at the Center for American Progress Action Fund.

thumbs1.gifAccording to data in a new IAEA report, Iran appears to have acquired enough enriched uranium for a single crude nuclear bomb on the Bush administratrion's watch.

Here's the back-of-the-envelope math for all you geeks out there:

    – Iran possesses an estimated 630 kg of low-enriched uranium (LEU) containing 3-5% of the fissile isotope U-235. Uranium enriched at this level of U-235 purity is suitable for use in energy reactors. But uranium enriched to 90% U-235 (or greater) is considered weapons-grade highly-enriched uranium (HEU).

    – Iran could acquire weapons-grade HEU by further enriching its existing LEU stockpile, which contains somewhere between roughly 19 and 30 kg of U-235. This translates to around 21 to 33 kg of weapons-grade HEU.

    – Both the IAEA and the U.S. DOE say 25 kg of weapons-grade HEU is enough for one bomb; many experts believe the threshold is much lower, perhaps even half that.

Thus, with its existing stockpile of LEU, Iran is well within range of having sufficient feed for one nuke.

Conservatives Blame CAFE Standards For Auto Industry’s Troubles from Think Progress

Typical behavior from those interested in profit only. Geeze these right wingers have no decency and really about their own self interests....

As the CEOs of Detroit's Big Three automakers pleaded for a $25 billion bailout from Congress this week, conservatives have been looking for an easy culprit to blame for the auto industry's seeming collapse. First it was the unions. Now conservatives have turned their attention to the modest fuel economy (CAFE) standards — fleetwide average of 35 miles per gallon by 2020 — imposed in last year's Energy Independence and Security Act. Last night on Fox News, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney echoed other conservatives in pointing the finger at the fuel economy changes:

    – MITT ROMNEY: Well, government did [cause a lot of this]. There's no question but that the CAFE standards have put an unusual burden on the domestic automobile manufacturers. And our energy policies as a country continue to put burdens on domestic manufacturers. That's just — that's reality. [11/19/08]

    – WILLIAM KRISTOL: Well, one problem with the auto industry is we have been telling them how to operate an awful lot, you know, in terms of CAFE standards and other things, probably which should not have been most — may have been the most — not the most intelligent way to help that industry. [11/16/08]

    – SEAN HANNITY: They [the government] — you know, between the unions, between trade policy, safety standards, CAFE standards, you know, economy, fuel economy standards, they're forcing these auto companies to be in a position where they're not as competitive. [11/14/08]

Senate OKs jobless benefits extension from Raw Story Breaking News

The U.S. Senate today passed by unanimous consent a bill that will extend unemployment benefits to jobless Americans by up to 13 weeks. The legislation had passed the House of Representatives in October by a 368 to 28 vote.

"Because of the tight job market, the president believes it would be appropriate to further extend unemployment benefits, and he would sign the legislation," said White House Spokeswoman Dana Perino.

Prisoner of Conscience Robin Long's Letter to Obama from AfterDowningStreet.org

By Robin Long, prisoner of conscience | November 6, 2008

    Image

    Dear President-elect Obama,

My name is Robin Long. I am currently serving a 15-month sentence at a Naval brig in California. I am locked up for refusing to participate in the invasion of the sovereign nation of Iraq, a military action I felt was wrong and an action condemned by most of the international community.

    It was illegal and immoral.

My sentence also includes dishonorable discharge. I was no doubt made an example, because not only did I refuse to deploy by going AWOL but I spoke out. I spoke out about the atrocities that are going on over there and also the extensive web of lies the Bush administration told us and Congress, to go over there. I did all of this very openly while AWOL in Canada, where I was making a life for myself.

When I joined the Army in 2003 I felt honored to be serving my country. I was behind the President. I thought it was an honorable venture to be in Iraq. I was convinced by the lies of the Bush administration just like Congress and a majority of Americans. But just because I joined the Army doesn't mean I abdicated my ability to evolve intellectually and morally. When I realized the war in Iraq was a mistake, I saw refusing to fight as my only option. My conscience was screaming at me not to participate.

I feel, like many others, that a government that punishes its citizens for taking a moral stand for humanity and against injustices will lose the faith of its people. The war in Iraq was a Bush administration mistake and my punishment is a product of that mistake and failed policy. Please see that I am being punished for my ideals and morals and for standing up to a giant so my voice could be heard. People can't be afraid to stand up and say "This is wrong, we need change."

You may say I signed a contract. I'd like to quote from a letter that Thomas Jefferson wrote to George Washington in April of 1793 on his thoughts of contracts and the French Treaties. And I quote "When performance, for instance, becomes impossible, non-performance is not immoral. So if performance becomes self destructive for the party, the law of self preservation overrules the laws of obligations to others. For the reality of these principals I appeal to the true fountains of evidence, the heart and head of every rational honest man."

For me to continue to participate in my military contract would have been self-destructive to me at my deepest levels of self. It goes against everything I believe in, my ideals and morals. In the case of the invasion of Iraq, international law was broken, as well as violating our own Constitution. Article VI of the Constitution states that any treaty the US is signatory shall be the supreme law of the land. The invasion broke the rules set out for declaring war in the Geneva Convention. And according to the Nuremburg Principles laid out at the Nuremburg Tribunals, I had a higher international duty supported by our Constitution to refuse service in Iraq.

While I was in Canada I had a child. This sentence will have a lasting impact not only on my life but also on the life of my son. My son and his mother are Canadian (not duel citizenship). With a felony conviction (a year plus a day), it will be very difficult for me to re-enter Canada. I would like to live there so I can be in my son's life. Every child needs a father. I want to return to my responsibilities as a father.

This sentence is a great hardship because it has an impact on my life that could last well into the future. This would successfully separate a family. My family needs me, to be a father figure and a financial supporter. My son was born after the fact of me deserting. Please don't punish him more than I already have by being gone now. I love and miss him and the thought of being reunited with him is helping me get through my time here. I feel I made the right decision by refusing and am more than willing to sit in the brig for my ideals. But I worry about the effect this has on my family.

I ask you to please consider granting me presidential clemency or a pardon. I have given this to many different organizations and people to ensure that you receive a copy. I am so happy that you were elected President. I feel real change coming. You are the light after the storm, "Hurricane Bush" if you will.

If you would like more information on me you can listen to an audio interview on couragetoresist.org (below) or read more at freerobin.org, ivaw.org, resisters.ca

Paulson Was Behind Bailout Martial Law Threat

Senator James Inhofe has revealed that Henry Paulson was behind the threats of martial law and a new great depression prior to the passage of the bailout bill, having made such warnings during a conference call on September 19th, around two weeks before the legislation was eventually approved by both the Senate and Congress.

As we reported at the time, on October 2, Democratic Congressman Brad Sherman gave a stunning speech on the House floor during which he decried the fact that, "Many of us were told in private conversations that if we voted against this bill on Monday that the sky would fall, the market would drop two or three thousand points the first day, another couple of thousand the second day, and a few members were even told that there would be martial law in America if we voted no."

A few days before, Rep. Michael Burgess also told the House, "Mr. Speaker I understand we are under Martial Law as declared by the speaker last night," referring to a temporary suspension of the rules and procedures of Congress by its leaders so that a bill can be passed quickly.

But the origin of the most dire warnings about physical martial law in America, to which Sherman was likely referring, has now been exposed.

EPA Moves to Ease Air Rules for Parks from Truthout - All Articles

      Regional administrators decry decision.

The Environmental Protection Agency is finalizing new air-quality rules that would make it easier to build coal-fired power plants, oil refineries and other major polluters near national parks and wilderness areas, even though half of the EPA's 10 regional administrators formally dissented from the decision and four others criticized the move in writing.

Documents obtained by The Washington Post show that the administration's push to weaken Clean Air Act protections for "Class 1 areas" nationwide has sparked fierce resistance from senior agency officials. All but two of the regional administrators objecting to the proposed rule are political appointees.

The proposal would change the practice of measuring pollution levels near national parks, which is currently done over three-hour and 24-hour increments to capture emission spikes during periods of peak energy demand; instead, the levels would be averaged over a year. Under this system, spikes in pollution would no longer violate the law.

Employee Free Choice Act Would Restore Worker Protections from Truthout

The Employee Free Choice Act resurrects common sense. It says that if a majority of employees want union representation, then the employer must deal with the union. Democracy anyone? It also streamlines dispute resolution in initial contract talks, and imposes stiffer penalties on employers for unfairly interfering with union organizing.

Critics stoke fear and loathing of the proposed new law by asserting that the act deprives workers of the secret ballot NLRB elections. Not true. The act does not affect the option to hold a secret ballot NLRB election, except to make it the workers' option, not the employer's.

The suggestion that the creation of more unions might pinch an already moaning economy may carry more appeal at a time when our economy needs stimulation. But don't be fooled - the prevailing approach to economic stimulation applies the self-same trickle-down theories that got us into this economic mess.

While the music may have changed on election day, we need to make sure the dance does, too. That means rebuilding our economy from the bottom up, by restoring respect, dignity and fairness for working Americans.

The Employee Free Choice Act would help do that. Which is why President-elect Obama should do more than sign it if it comes across his desk. He should use his mandate to make sure it gets there. Starting now.

The Wrong Place to Be Chronically Ill from Truthout

    via http://www.truthout.org/111908HA

Chronically ill Americans suffer far worse care than their counterparts in seven other industrial nations, according to a new study by the Commonwealth Fund, a New York-based foundation that has pioneered in international comparisons. It is the latest telling evidence that the dysfunctional American health care system badly needs reform.

The results of the study, published by the respected journal Health Affairs, belie the notion held by many American politicians that health care in this country is the best in the world. That may be true at a handful of pre-eminent medical centers, but it is hardly true for the care provided to a huge portion of the population.

The Commonwealth Fund's survey of 7,500 patients in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Britain and the United States focused on patients who suffered from at least one of seven chronic conditions: hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, lung problems, cancer or depression.

The care they received in this country - or more often did not receive - ought to be a cause for shame. More than half of the American patients went without care because of high out-of-pocket costs. They did not visit a doctor when sick, skipped a recommended test or treatment or failed to fill a prescription. The uninsured suffered most, but even 43 percent of those who had insurance all year skipped care because of costs.

Americans also were most likely to report wasting time because their care was so poorly organized. About a third reported that medical records and test results were not available when needed or that tests were duplicated unnecessarily. A third experienced a medical error, such as being given the wrong medication or test results. Some 40 percent found it very difficult to get after-hours care without going to an emergency room.

The United States did comparatively well in some areas, such as providing relatively prompt access to specialists and clear instructions to patients leaving the hospital. But the nation's overall performance was abysmal.

By contrast, Dutch patients reported far more favorable experiences with their health care system, largely because the Netherlands provides universal coverage (through individual mandates and private health insurance), a strong primary care system and widespread use of electronic medical records. It should be possible to achieve the same level of performance here.

Report: US Uses Aid to Promote Non-Humanitarian Goals from Truthout - All Articles

Survey respondents say military objectives prioritized over humanitarian ones.

United Nations - The United States, the world's largest international aid donor, is among the worst at promoting the independence, impartiality and neutrality of humanitarian aid deliveries to needy populations, according to a survey by a Madrid-based nonprofit group that monitors donors' performance.

The Development Assistance Research Associates (DARA) Humanitarian Response Index 2008 measures how effectively the world's 23 largest donors deliver aid. The United States ranked 15th in overall effectiveness and only 13th in the level of generosity measured by the size of its economy.

But it ranked near the bottom, 22nd, when it came to adherence to principles and guidelines established by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development to ensure that political considerations don't exclude worthy recipients of aid.

‘Kristol Ball’ Breaks: Stevens Will ‘Hang On In Alaska,’ McCain Will Conquer The ‘Path To The Presidency’ from Think Progress

"Yesterday, Anchorage mayor Mark Begich was declared the winner in Alaska's tight U.S. Senate race, defeating Ted Stevens's hopes of coming back for a seventh term. Stevens conceded earlier today. A big part of Stevens's downfall was his conviction in October on seven felony charges for making false statements.

This is a loss for Stevens, but it is also a loss for Fox's beloved Kristol Ball. On election night, Bill Kristol bravely predicted not only would Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) win the presidency, but Stevens would win re-election to the Senate. He also dismissed Stevens's ethics violations, calling them "seven counts of something-or-other":

"It Could Be Structured By Cows And We Would Rate It": How The Ratings Agencies Helped Cause The Financial Crisis. from TPMmuckraker

This morning, reports the Wall Street Journal, credit ratings agency Standard & Poor's sharply downgraded its rating for bond insurer Ambac Financial, anticipating that the company's debt obligations would continue to absorb losses.

    Why should we care?

Because this seemingly mundane piece of financial news offers a window into one of the crucial -- and often under-covered -- causes of the financial crisis currently shaking Washington and the country: the role of the credit ratings agencies. And inside that wider crisis, as we'll be making clear in the coming weeks, there's perhaps as much muck, both personal and institutional, as anything the Bush administration has given us over the last eight years.

First, a very quick and dirty rundown of the issue:

The banks and insurers felled by the collapse of the housing market relied on the three major credit ratings agencies -- S&P, Moody's, and Fitch -- to rate the mortgage-backed securities that they offered to investors. But here's the problem: the ratings agencies are paid for their work by the very banks and insurers for whom they're producing ratings. If the banks don't like the rating they receive from one ratings agency, they can simply go to another agency that's willing to produce a more favorable score -- what's known as "ratings shopping."

As a result, the agencies have an obvious incentive to knowingly inflate their ratings -- and sometimes even to rate junk securities that shouldn't even get a rating at all. And since many of these securities turned out to be all but worthless pools of home-loan mortgages, that's exactly what the ratings agencies often did.

Internal agency documents released last month as part of an investigation by Rep. Henry Waxman's House Oversight and Government Reform Committee show that at least some ratings analysts were aware that their ratings were more about increasing their company's bottom line than accurately gauging the value of the securities at issue.

City Room™ - News In Brief - Lobbying for Senate Seat Raises Ethics Questions:

"Illinois continues to wait for Governor Rod Blagojevich to pick a replacement for President-elect Barack Obama in the Senate. Obama officially resigned his seat on Sunday, but lobbying by his potential successors has been going on for weeks, not all of it discreetly. In several instances, the staff of Democratic congressmen from Illinois used government email accounts to promote their bosses' Senate bids. Those emails are now raising some ethical questions."

Shuster Cites Hamsher on The Lieberman Cave In from Firedoglake by Pachacutec

David Shuster quoted this post by Jane on MSNBC tonight. Peter Slutsky, the liberal guest on the show, reacts to the quote. Peter's a good friend and a genuinely good guy, argues that if Obama made a mistake about Lieberman's chairmanship, it will be Obama who pays the price.

I don't think that's right. Lieberman promised to investigate the Katrina response when he ran for reelection and then refused to do so, to the pervasive harm of a lot of Katrina victims.

Lieberman oversees 50 billion dollars in no bid Homeland Security contracts, a system rife with graft, abuse and corruption. Seems to me some real oversight in that position could free up some money to help save three million automobile industry jobs.

New Web Tool: The Solutions Are Waiting from WorldChanging by WorldChanging Team

    Click to load video

Worldchanging ally Michael Schmitz from Berlin sent this terrific video our way earlier this week. He and several friends produced the animation, which reviews (in a weirdly soothing way) the process of climate change, and offers a glimpse of a grim future in which we've done nothing about it. But the main point of the video is hope and education: the animators describe a variety of solutions that will be needed to transform the way our national and social systems operate.

The video underscores some important points: the need for smart policy to support and hasten the development of clean forms of energy, and for regulations that will limit the amount of carbon dioxide that corporations and individuals can create. As the video explains it, implementing the right policies around the best alternative energy options will allow us to drop the worst options – like nuclear power and carbon capture and storage – from our energy portfolio.

At the end of the animation is an interactive tool that allows you to explore solutions for curbing our carbon emissions. You can click around to learn about the efficiency measures, alternative energy options, and various regulation tools that could be used take us from the disastrous 14 gigaton CO2 future we are now facing to the 3 gigaton CO2 future we need.

When Conservatives are down, all they have to say is "Card Check" from Crooks and Liars

    Digby writes:

The economic crisis, particularly the Big 3 meltdown, is offering the right what they see as a new opportunity to break unions and destroy any advances workers might have expected under a progressive government. They may be temporarily in disarray politically, but the right never forgets their primary mission --- protecting the wealthy. And they are very good at advancing that agenda whether in the majority or the minority. Under the Shock Doctrine, they have a perfect opportunity to end the union movement in America and they'll certainly do their best to take advantage of the moment.

When China Will Be Able To Pwn The US from Firedoglake

The moment when China becomes a consumer driven society is the moment when the US loses its leadership of the world, and when if it's economy isn't in good shape, it crashes out.  Right now the US has numbers in terms of balances of payments, outstanding debt and so on, which in any other country, would have caused not an "financial crisis" but an economic crash, at best looking like what happened to Argentina at the beginning of the decade. That is to say, an actual significant contraction of GDP, massive unemployment, collapse of the dollar, and probably an inflation crisis.  At worse, and this is not an unlikely scenario, it would have a crisis similar to Russia after the collapse of the USSR—which is to say, a crisis so severe that getting food is an issue, an actual decline in the population and so on.

Why?  Because the US needs massive inflows of money from nations like China and Japan in order to finance both the government and private consumption.  China and Japan, and other countries, for that matter, have amassed holdings of US securities, cash and so on, in the many trillions, as a result.  They have been willing to buy assets that they know they will probably not see a full real return on because the US buys their exports, and in China's case, is busily shipping American jobs to China, thus industrializing China.

Lieberman: 'Obama's not a Marxist' from TOP 10 Blogs by media@politico.com

Back in April, Bill Kristol compared Barack Obama's "bitter" comments to Karl Marx's views on religion in his New York Times column.

That day, Fox News analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano spoke to Sen. Joe Lieberman on his radio show, and asked whether Obama is "a Marxist as Bill Kristol says might be the case." Lieberman didn't say he was a Marxist, but also wouldn't rule out that the President-elect might carry around a dog-eared copy of The Marx-Engels Reader.

But tonight, during Katie Couric's  network exclusive on the "CBS Evening News," Lieberman seemed sure he wasn't a Marxist.

The Cost of the Bailout in Terms People Can Relate To from ePolitical.org

It appears that I underestimated the cost of the bailout in my previous post. Today, CNBC reported that the cost stands at $4.28 trillion. That is more than the total inflation adjusted cost of all of WWII. Here are some numbers to put that in perspective:

There are just over 300,000,000 people currently living in the entire United States, so the cost of the bailout equates to a little less than $14,266 per US resident (man, woman, and child).

The market cap of Google and Microsoft combined is less than $300 billion. As a result, the government could have bought all of both companies 14 times over and still have cash to spare.

The cost of a top-tier college education is approaching $50,000 per year. That means the government could have sent at least 21,400,000 students to four year universities for free.

The Enduring Legacy of the Worst President in American History from ePolitical.org

Between the economic crisis, the war in Iraq, a misguided foreign policy and divisive domestic policy that squandered international goodwill and Americans' desire to unite in the aftermath of September 11th, warrantless wiretaps, torture, policies that inhibit scientific progress, and unprecedented undue corporate influence in regulatory agencies, there are many reasons that the Bush administration is one of the worst ever. However, future historians will probably judge Bush by the aftereffects of his policies that endure long after the incoming Obama administration begins to change the nation's course. It is therefore worth asking the question, "what will be the enduring legacy of this administration?"

Running enormous government budget deficits and pushing through an ultra-expensive bailout package has dramatically increased the national debt and will likely take decades to pay-off. In the process, the nation's debt may be downgraded and the cost of government borrowing may go up. In any event, it will likely cause future taxes to be higher and will make it difficult to implement expensive new programs like universal health care and may jeopardize existing entitlement programs like Medicare and Social Security. It is possible that my generation will lose the ability to retire at a reasonable age because of Bush's overspending.

The Iraq war destabilized the Middle East and has emboldened Shiite Iran by eliminating the Sunni-led government in Iraq that had previously provided a counter-balance. Iran has already assumed a more aggressive posture by pursuing its nuclear ambitions and adopting a more aggressive posture toward Israel. A nuclear Iran would pose a far greater threat to the US and its interests than Iraq ever could and would have been enabled by the Bush administration's policies.

Indian frigate destroys 'mothership' as raids off Somalia continue | World news | The Guardian

Somali bandits terrorising the busy shipping routes around the Horn of Africa suffered a rare setback when an Indian warship destroyed a pirate "mothership" after coming under fire in the Gulf of Aden.

The Indian Navy said that its frigate, one of the numerous international warships dispatched to patrol the waters around the Horn of Africa, had approached a suspicious vessel on Tuesday evening. It turned out to be a previously captured ship being used by pirates as a base to launch their speedboats far out to sea.

"The INS Tabar closed in on the mother vessel and asked her to stop for investigation," an Indian navy spokesman said. "But on repeated calls, the vessel's threatening response was that she would blow up the naval warship if it approached."

After a heavy exchange of fire, the pirate ship was destroyed. Two speedboats escaped.

If US automakers want a bail-out, they should ask oil companies

Here's some data. According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (pdf), Americans drove about three trillion miles last year. To fuel all of that shuttling around, according to the Energy Information Administration, we purchased about 142 billion gallons of gasoline from retailers. A little bit of quick division and we find that, in 2007, the average vehicle mile was travelled with a fuel efficiency of 21 miles per gallon. Kind of pathetic.

At the same time, in 2007, the average gallon of gasoline ran about $2.80 – which is to say that Americans spent something like $400bn on gasoline last year alone. The EIA further reports that, in 2007, "distribution, marketing and retail dealer costs and profits in 2007 were 10% of the gasoline price". Just for fun, let's guess that "profits" accounted for 62.5% of that 10%. Well then: $400bn x .1 x .625 = (drumroll) $25bn! Let's see ...where have I heard that number before?

Overall, the oil industry collected $155bn in profits in 2007. That's in no small part (about 16% if this math is right) thanks to a decades-long lobbying effort to keep vehicle fuel standards as low as possible, which, as collateral damage, has made the American fleet uncompetitive in an era of high oil prices. That, in turn, is one (a big one) of the many reasons the auto industry is sitting on the precipice of a major collapse. And if it needs $25bn to stay alive, I can think of one place where they can find that kind of money.

Bill Clinton campaigns against GOP 'firewall' from Raw Story Breaking News

Several thousand supporters showed up on a cold Georgia night to see former President Bill Clinton speak in support of Jim Martin. Martin, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, will go up against Republican incumbent Saxby Chambliss in a Dec. 2 runoff election.

Chambliss has warned that Republicans need control of the seat to block an "out of control" Democratic Congress. Clinton argued that times call for unity instead of division. "This country doesn't need a firewall against the future. It needs a bridge to the future," he said.

"One of the problems that I had when I became president," he added, "is that, over and over, we got a lot done in my first two years, but we couldn't pass health care reform and couldn't do one or two other things, because of the Republican filibuster in the Senate."

Stevens Bows Out in Alaska Senate Race - The Caucus Blog - NYTimes.com

It truly is the end of an era – Ted Stevens, the longest-serving Republican senator in history and a force on Capitol Hill for decades, conceded his re-election loss today.

The end was not what Mr. Stevens would have scripted – a defeat just weeks after his conviction in federal court on ethics charges. The final votes were counted Tuesday, his 85th birthday, and the news came after his colleagues considered but postponed a vote on banishing him from the Republican ranks. Together, the developments represented a dismal finale for a man who had handled untold billions in federal dollars, helped create the modern military through his funding decisions and shaped his very state.

In a statement issued Wednesday afternoon, Mr. Stevens said the math was inescapable with Democrat Mark Begich, the mayor of Anchorage, ahead by more votes than remained to be counted.

Right Wing's Armies of Darkness March On | BuzzFlash.org

Lately, life has felt like the tail end of a zombie movie. As the sun rises over the tattered scene, bloodied protagonists let out a collective sigh of relief that finally, almost unbelievably, the nightmare is over. But before the credits roll, one last demon pops up where they least expect it, for that final scare.

Except this isn't a movie. No, it's more like the never-ending Friday the 13th series (the twelfth in the series to be released in 2009), with enemies that keep coming back and almost winning with the same old attacks. After the collective sigh of relief that followed the election of Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL), liberals have already started the infighting and self-criticism. But the boogeyman is still out there, and he's amassing an army.

One phalanx in the fight belongs to Grassfire.org. Just like the name suggests, Grassfire imagines itself as a grassroots effort, but is largely on the surface.  And just like the image it provokes, its members are planning a blitzkrieg of fear mongering and misinformation.

Grassfire sent out an e-mail designed to scare people into joining its "army that is ready to take on Obama's agenda." But are the issues of most importance to this new "resistance" group really part of Obama's plan for the nation?

The e-mail lists nine "threats to our liberties" presented by the incoming administration. The common thread through all of these threats is alarmism.  You'd think groups such as this would have learned from McCain's campaign blunder and not try to paint Obama as a socialist, but that's number one on the list of threats (another page warns of Obama's "'brave new world' of collectivism," which would be funny if it wasn't so sad). The group also warns the "end of marriage" is on the horizon and that liberals, of all people, want to restrict free speech.

These warnings rely chiefly on misdirection.  Take, for example, Grassfire's warning of  "open border anarchy." On its Web site, Grassfire claims their "award-winning 'Where's The Fence?' TV spots -- featuring three old ladies looking for the border fence -- became the catch-phrase for opponents of D.C.'s amnesty plan."

Though the border fence and immigration reform are related, asking "Where is the fence?" (which Obama voted in favor of when he was in the Senate) obscures the issue. The narrator of the ad says "Now Congress and the president want to give amnesty to millions of illegal aliens instead of securing the border." The truth is, it's not an either/or situation. The so-called amnesty bill, penned by Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA), didn't pass.  The border fence did. We're building a border fence, not offering amnesty.

In reality, Obama's immigration agenda emphasizes a secure border before anything else.  With the looming problems of the economy, energy, and foreign wars, most immigration experts believe Obama and Congress will hold off on any new reforms until late in his term, if then.

Another creative turn of phrase translates Obama's post-partisan politics into his "post-American agenda." This is more than just clever linguistics; they clearly see partisanship as elemental to being American.  Grassfire began as a staunch supporter of George W. Bush in 2000. In fact, some of its first petitions were merely vehicles for people to voice support for the president. They maintained that Congress and the American people should support their president in wartime, and that those who criticize the president are unpatriotic and mean to do harm to the country.  Now that the president is a member of another party, there is no need to give him even a second to prove his ability to lead this nation, especially if he wants to do it in a non-partisan way.  Coalition building is just not American!

According to the Center for Media and Democracy's SourceWatch site, Grassfire is anything but grassroots.  The 501(c)4 is listed as a "front group" on the site, and SourceWatch notes that public relations for Grassfire are handled by Shirley & Banister Public Affairs, whose president, Craig Shirley, was part of the team that created the infamous Willie Horton ad. Shirley and Banister represent like-minded clients such as Ann Coulter, the Christian Anti-Defamation Commission, and the National Rifle Association.

Grassfire is one of many groups amassing armies to fight everything Obama tries to do, no matter where it falls on the political spectrum. Despite Obama's promise to reach across the aisle and to be everyone's president, no matter if they voted for him or not, some people will never learn to work together. In order to make the most out of a Democratic-led government (much as Bush & Co. did for conservative aims during their time in office), we don't need to stoop to marginalization and fear mongering like the radical right does. But we do need to be prepared for the fact that there really are monsters under the bed.

Right Wing Using Bailout Crisis To Push Anti-Union Attitudes -- Their 2008 Hot-Button Issue? | BuzzFlash.org:

"It's hard to imagine how letting the American auto industry crash and burn would make things better. Romney, who campaigned in Michigan only a few months back on the promise to preserve jobs, told CNN that 'in the long term' auto industry bankruptcies would make for a healthier economy. He did seem a little uncomfortable when reminded of his campaign promises (at 2 minutes, 40 seconds into the CNN video). But job losses, declining wages, and lost pensions at the Big Three and in all the smaller companies that would fall like dominoes behind the Big Three, no longer worry him. It's all about trusting the free market and 'shedding excess labor,' is that it, Mitt?"

Sarah Palin's dead lake - Sarah Palin Lake Lucille | Salon News

By promoting runaway development in her hometown, say locals, Palin has "fouled her own nest" -- and that goes for the lake where she lives.

Sept. 19, 2008 | WASILLA, Alaska -- Every morning she's at home here, Sarah Palin wakes up to a postcard view from her lakeside home. Out the windows of her two-story wood-framed house stretch the serene, birch-lined waters of Lake Lucille. Ducks go gliding by the red-and-white Piper Cub floatplane docked outside. With the snow-frosted Chugach and Talkeetna mountains looming in the distance, the scene seems to define the Alaska that Palin celebrates: rugged, majestic, unspoiled.

And, yet, the lake Sarah Palin lives on is dead.

"Lake Lucille is basically a dead lake -- it can't support a fish population," said Michelle Church, a Mat-Su Valley borough assembly member and environmentalist. "It's a runway for floatplanes."

Palin recently told the New Yorker magazine that Alaskans "have such a love, a respect for our environment, for our lands, for our wildlife, for our clean water and our clean air. We know what we've got up here and we want to protect that, so we're gonna make sure that our developments up here do not adversely affect that environment at all. I don't want development if there's going to be that threat to harming our environment."

But as mayor of her hometown, say many local critics, Palin showed no such stewardship.

"Sarah's legacy as mayor was big-box stores and runaway growth," said Patty Stoll, a retired Wasilla schoolteacher who once worked in the same school with Palin's parents, Chuck and Sally Heath. "The truth is, Wasilla is just plain ugly, it's not a pleasant place to live. It's not thought out. And that's a shame.

"Sarah fouled her own nest, and I can't understand why. I hate to think it was simply greed or ambition."

Palin publicity blitz: No signs of slowing: Gov. Sarah Palin | adn.com

She's a national political figure and one of the world's most famous people.

    She's also governor of Alaska.

As Sarah Palin settles back into her job as the state's chief executive, a new ethics complaint filed Tuesday says she's already improperly mixing her official duties and broader political ambitions.

The charge: That Palin broke state ethics rules by holding national television interviews about her run for vice president from the governor's office.

The complaint comes as Palin's personal life, her prospects as a future presidential candidate and everything she says and does continues to draw headlines.

Zane Henning, a North Slope worker from Wasilla, said he filed the complaint with the attorney general. He says Palin is promoting her future political career on state property, pointing in particular to the governor's Nov. 10 interview with Fox News Channel host Greta Van Susteren.

"The governor is using her official position and office in an attempt to repair her damaged political image on the national scene," Henning wrote.

Senate cancels vote on doomed auto bailout - Yahoo! News

WASHINGTON – The Senate's top Democrat has called off a planned vote this week on a $25 billion auto industry bailout. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said that he wanted to figure out some way to help Detroit's struggling Big Three but that efforts to do so had stalled.

The White House and congressional Republicans rejected Democrats' plan to dip into the $700 billion Wall Street rescue fund to finance loans to U.S. automakers.

A bipartisan group from auto industry states is working to cut a deal on a scaled-down aid package. If agreement can be reached, Reid said the Senate could still vote on it as part of a measure to extend jobless benefits.

Why the Republicans Want to Kill GM | BuzzFlash.org

"And so comes along the U.S. auto industry, especially General Motors. As a result of really bad management, focusing on immediate profitability and not caring much about the long run until very recently, it's in a very bad way, with both GM and Chrysler facing possible bankruptcy without Federal government assistance. AIG, an insurance company, mind you, that made some very bad decisions on what to insure, gets $150 billion. The U.S. auto industry, which directly and indirectly employs an estimated 3 million people wants an extra (and paltry) $25 billion beyond the loan it is already getting to help it retool for fuel-efficient cars, wants $25 billion more to help it get to the time when it can start producing modern cars in significant numbers. And all of a sudden the Republicans are saying no. So why, you might ask?

Part of the answer does lie in the standard reasons given. Many U.S. automaker workers live in Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan and those states seem to be gone from the red group to the blue for quite some time to come, the racist messages that the Republicans used to win over those "Reagan Democrats" for the last 30 years to the contrary notwithstanding. That may be true in part, but there are U.S. automaker plants in other parts of the country, and certainly the suppliers and especially the dealers are all over the country. So that one doesn't hold much water.

The Republicans' own answer is, well if you bail out one industry, how do you pick and choose among the others that might/will start lining up. So let's just let the auto industry go. Anyway, the free market should just be allowed to work, and the companies, well actually just Chrysler and GM, apparently, should just be allowed to go bankrupt and they will come out of it just fine. Well, they picked and chose among the financial sector companies, so that one doesn't hold much water either."

Baby Mangino's True Identity ... Revealed! from Deadspin

You know, when this loveable little tyke first appeared in the inbox, no one knew where he lived or what his secret Clark Kent-like identity was and, frankly, I didn't want to know. The mystery was part of his charm, like a magic trick you can't figure out, but after the strong outpouring of support that he received in the nomination process for Sports Human Of The Year, natural curiosity got the better of me. I had to know more. And now the whole world will know, because Baby Mangino has gone from master celebrity impersonator to bona fide celebrity.

Soviet-style Purge in Final Days of Bush Administration: the Silent Coup d’etat | AfterDowningStreet.org

Half the story has been told. On Tuesday the Washington Post reported that Bush is creating civil service positions for loyal appointees, in order to make it hard for Obama to get rid of them.

Bush has also, for some time now, been terminating large numbers of employees in the federal government, people known as whistleblowers, people suspected of disloyalty. Some of the higher profile cases are well known.

But there is more to the story. And it follows the strategy described in Thomas Frank's recent book, "The Wrecking Crew." I've been given what is believed to be a very incomplete list of 33 names of people terminated or forced to resign. These people are being forced into the ranks of the unemployed. They include, by salary ranking, 13 people classified as GS-15 or GS 14, and another 20 GS-13s and GS-12s. Some of these people do not want their names made public. Others are perfectly happy to talk. They include:

    At the EPA:
    Dr. Marsha Coleman-Adebayo
    Coriolana Simon

    At the Department of Commerce:
    Janet Howard

    At the Department of Labor:
    Charolette Yee

    At the Department of Education:
    Nicole Harrison

    At the Department of Transportation:
    Taft Kelly

At the Department of Commerce – Trademark and Patent:
    Renee Berry
    Willie Berry
    Norman Wright
    Mary Dixon
    Fetfum Abramham
    Binta Robinson
    Dusta Yevassa

I've spoken with Marsha Coleman-Adebayo and Renee Berry. Coleman-Adebayo called what's happening a "silent coup d'etat." The Bush administration, she said, is "embedding their foot soldiers inside the government in order to sabotage any Obama initiatives while at the same time terminating federal employees who they assume would be supportive of the new administration." She compared this process to a soviet purge.

Berry said that people being forced out of work are looking at a future in poverty. "The government refuses, in many cases, to provide good recommendations for these employees, and that leaves them with a 20- to 30-year gap in their employee history."

Does the drama never end? Last month we regaled you with the drama of Sweet Occasions bakery — the bounced checks, the stolen cash, the prostitution, the Land Rover, the European vacations, the potential prostitution. Soap-worthy, no?

Well Andy Singer, the man whose name is attached to all this, closed Sweet Occasions when the pile of shit got too deep to dig out of, and reopened a near-identical storefront in Wicker Park, under the similar name Sweet Thang. Which then lost its lease, and reopened in Roscoe Village. And now that location, Gapers Block reports, is closed — under mysterious (but somehow hauntingly familiar) circumstances.

Mitt Romney: Let Detroit go bankrupt

IF General Motors, Ford and Chrysler get the bailout that their chief executives asked for yesterday, you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye. It won't go overnight, but its demise will be virtually guaranteed.

Without that bailout, Detroit will need to drastically restructure itself. With it, the automakers will stay the course — the suicidal course of declining market shares, insurmountable labor and retiree burdens, technology atrophy, product inferiority and never-ending job losses. Detroit needs a turnaround, not a check.

Bachmann: I would say, what I would say is that the news media should do a penetrating expose and take a look -- I wish they would. I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out, are they pro-America or anti-America? I think the people would love to see an expose like that.

She's come up with a new one folks. She said that she never made those statements and they have now become an "urban legend." Is she living in a B type Horror/Slasher film world or what? Here's what she told Alan Colmes Tuesday night.

Rahm Emanuel Lays Down the Law from The Washington Independent

Incoming White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel had some straight talk for top business executives, telling them to get on board with major health care reform and help for the middle class, the Wall Street Journal says. Emanuel also struck a "combative" pose in addressing the executives, the Journal reported:

"When it gets rough out there, a lot of business leaders get out of the car and say, 'We're OK with minor reform.' I'm challenging you today, we're going to have to do big, serious things," Rahm Emanuel said, speaking to The Wall Street Journal's CEO Council, a conference convened to elicit corporate opinion on the challenges facing the new president.

$25 Billion for Automakers Only Tip of the Iceberg from The Washington Independent

During yesterday's Senate hearing, one testy exchange between GOP Sen. Bob Corker (Tenn.) and General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner summarized the Republicans' mood:

Corker: "Would you all make the pledge that if you get the $25 billion, you'll never be back to see us again?"

Wagoner: "Sir, if you could make the pledge to us that the U.S. economy will turn around on a certain point in time, then — and the financial markets will rejuvenate, then we would be glad, based on that data, to come back to you and give you … our exact best estimate of how much financing we think we need, sir. We'd be very glad to do that."

Corker: "You're going to be back, aren't you?"

But, in the middle of this financial mess, many economists are warning that the economic ripples of a Detroit failure would decimate businesses and communities far beyond Michigan.

Soon we'll be running a longer piece detailing the reasons that the bailout option might prove far less costly for taxpayers than allowing the companies to go under.

ABC News: Big Three CEOs Flew Private Jets to Plead for Public Funds

The CEOs of the big three automakers flew to the nation's capital yesterday in private luxurious jets to make their case to Washington that the auto industry is running out of cash and needs $25 billion in taxpayer money to avoid bankruptcy.

The CEOs of GM, Ford and Chrysler may have told Congress that they will likely go out of business without a bailout yet that has not stopped them from traveling in style, not even First Class is good enough.

All three CEOs - Rick Wagoner of GM, Alan Mulally of Ford, and Robert Nardelli of Chrysler - exercised their perks Tuesday by flying in corporate jets to DC. Wagoner flew in GM's $36 million luxury aircraft to tell members of Congress that the company is burning through cash, asking for $10-12 billion for GM alone.

"We want to continue the vital role we've played for Americans for the past 100 years, but we can't do it alone," Wagoner told the Senate Banking Committee.

While Wagoner testified, his G4 private jet was parked at Dulles airport. It is just one of a fleet of luxury jets owned by GM that continues to ferry executives around the world despite the company's dire financial straits.

"This is a slap in the face of taxpayers," said Tom Schatz, President of Citizens Against Government Waste. "To come to Washington on a corporate jet, and asking for a hand out is outrageous."

Wagoner's private jet trip to Washington cost his ailing company an estimated $20,000 roundtrip. In comparison, seats on Northwest Airlines flight 2364 from Detroit to Washington were going online for $288 coach and $837 first class.

After the hearing, Wagoner declined to answer questions about his travel.

Ford CEO Mulally's corporate jet is a perk included for both he and his wife as part of his employment contract along with a $28 million salary last year. Mulally actually lives in Seattle, not Detroit. The company jet takes him home and back on weekends.

"And even a former professor of Consitutional Law who is now the Democratic candidate for President may be blind to the true significance of bringing that high-powered corporate lawyer into his campaign, much less his Cabinet.

After nearly thirty years of Presidents in thrall to corporate power, America is on the verge of social collapse. In selecting corporate servants to staff his Administration, President Obama can speed our goverment and our Republic's rush to destruction.

In rejecting corporate sevants and the amorality they serve as he chooses his Cabinet, President Obama can reverse the megacorps' lethal corrosion of our society and Federal Government.

Assume Obama wins the presidency.... Is Holder attorney general?

Holder doesn't hesitate. "I got to tell you, that's going to be up to the president," he says. "And I will not be the president. I will also tell you that I am married to a wonderful woman who is a doctor. Her name is Sharon Malone. And Sharon Malone tells me that I won't be going anywhere except back to my law firm. So I think President Obama is going to have to talk to Sharon, and she's a pretty formidable person."

Dr. Malone sounds like a very wise doctor to me. Let's hope President Obama will follow her prescription.

Let's hope President Obama chooses an Attorney General -- and executive appointees -- for We the People, not for the megacorps."

Review: Twilight from Chicagoist by Rob Christopher

2008_11_19twilightposter.jpg What's the most hotly-anticipated event of the fall besides the presidential election? The release of Twilight, a movie based on the best-selling young adult novels by Stephenie Meyer. Security was so stringent at the press screening, not even Roger Ebert got off easy. Cell phones had to be turned in prior to admittance and everyone was wanded. So has all the expectant frenzy been worth it? In our view, Twilight may not be the movie everyone has been anticipating. And that's entirely a good thing.

Robert Gates: As Bad as Rumsfeld? from AfterDowningStreet.org

    By Ray McGovern, www.consortiumnews.com

"As Bad As Rumsfeld?" The title jars, doesn't it? The more so, since Defense Secretary Robert Gates found his predecessor, Donald Rumsfeld, such an easy act to follow.

But the jarring part reflects how malnourished most of us are on the thin gruel served up by the Fawning Corporate Media (FCM).

Over the past few months, Defense Secretary Gates has generated accolades from FCM pundits — like the Washington Post's David Ignatius — that read like letters of recommendation to graduate school.

This comes as no surprise to those of us – including his former colleagues at the CIA's analytical division – familiar with Gates's dexterity in orchestrating his own advancement. What DOES come as a surprise is the recurring rumor that President-elect Obama may decide to put new wine in old wineskins by letting Gates stay.

What can Barack Obama be thinking?

Chinese Want To Buy the Big 3 from Firedoglake

xin_09040318100363621151.thumbnail.jpgPer Marcy, who predicted it --  the Chinese car makers SAIC and Dongfeng have plans to acquire the Big 3:

A take-over of a large overseas auto maker would fit perfectly into China's plans. As reported before, China has realized that its export chances are slim without unfettered access to foreign technology. The brand cachet of Chinese cars abroad is, shall we say, challenged. The Chinese could easily export Made-in-China VWs, Toyotas, Buicks. If their joint venture partner would let them. The solution: Buy the joint venture partner. Especially, when he's in deep trouble.

At current market valuations (GM is worth less than Mattel) the Chinese government can afford to buy GM with petty cash. Even a hundred billion $ would barely dent China's more than $2t in currency reserves. For nobody in the world would buying GM and (while they are at it) Chrysler make more sense than for the Chinese. Overlap? What overlap? They would gain instant access to the world's markets with accepted brands, and proven technology.

Bigger Than Detroit’s Fate from The Washington Independent

"The performance of the companies has led many bailout critics to wonder aloud why anyone would want to save them. "People who say General Motors is too big to fail have not noticed that it has failed," conservative commentator George Will said Sunday on "This Week."

The industry hasn't done much to help its cause. After years fighting fuel-efficiency standards that might have made the Big Three more competitive in these lean times, the companies were quick Tuesday to attribute their troubles largely to the bad economy, not misguided internal decision-making. Foreign companies like Honda and Toyota are years ahead of Detroit in developing smaller, more efficient engines.

Many in Congress — even supporters of the auto bailout — doubt $25 billion will be enough to matter. "You're asking an awful lot," Dodd told the company heads at the end of Tuesday's hearing. "And I suspect … that this $25 billion is not going to be the end of it."

Report: Daschle to Head Health and Human Services from The Washington Independent

Moments after the Obama-Biden Transition team announced former Sen. Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) would head a health care policy working group in the new administration, MSNBC reports that Daschle will serve as the next secretary of health and human services.

The appointment, if confirmed, suggests Obama is serious about making health care reform a top priority. Daschle, now a professor at Georgetown University and distinguished fellow at the Center for American Policy, has long been an advocate for comprehensively overhauling the nation's existing private health care system. Daschle published a book on the topic recently. In a piece for The Huffington Post earlier this year, Daschle outlined his proposal to create a Federal Health Board, modeled after the Federal Reserve Board.

Only One of ‘Big Three’ Execs Commit to Iacocca-Type Salary Cut from The Washington Independent by Mike Lillis

In 1979, with Chrysler at the brink of failure, Lee Iacocca famously cut his salary to $1 per year in recognition of the federal help that eventually saved the company.

Fast forward nearly 30 years, and several lawmakers have put the Iacocca challenge to the CEOs of Detroit's Big Three, who are in Washington this week pleading with lawmakers for a $25 billion bailout to buoy the sinking industry.

During a Senate Banking Committee hearing with those executives yesterday, Sen. John Tester (D-Mont.) asked point-blank if the well-compensated executives would be willing to make the same sacrifice that Iacocca did. Only one, Chrysler head Robert Nardelli, answered non-evasively. " I'd be willing to accept that," he said.

For Barack Obama there's bad news, and then there's the bad news | BuzzFlash.org:

"Turns out, George W. Bush's inexpressibly dumbest advice on how we could all help win two foreign wars -- 'Go shopping' -- is actually the best advice for today's domestic situation; because consumer spending is the key, the ignition, the engine, the near-singular driving force of our once-great economic machine.

Unfortunately, George W. Bush's gross mismanagement of virtually all things macroeconomic has rendered that advice impossible to execute.

'Suddenly,' wrote the Times' economics columnist, David Leonhardt, last week, 'our consumer society is doing a lot less consuming.' And 'the numbers,' as he so drearily put it in the vernacular, 'are pretty incredible.'

Just how incredible? Try this: 'Consumer spending appears likely to fall next year for the first time since 1980 and perhaps by the largest amount since 1942' (my emphasis, our problem)."

Auto industry problems are complex; right wing is wrong to punish only workers | BuzzFlash.org

Auto workers, parts workers, and everyone else whose lives live and die by what happens with the auto industry. These people want to build quality products that other people want to buy, that they can afford to buy. In a country that doesn't make a whole lot of anything anymore, the auto industry should be a bright beacon of light. And right now, it's not.

So yes, help should come. And it should come with conditions -- not just to punish assembly line workers, but to guide the companies, and their executives, into making products that Americans can buy with pride, that can reduce gasoline use, and won't break down easily.

Obama is right that our problems are complex. And the auto industry is the ideal example. We need to change a lot of things in this country, not just to change them, but to make them work better. To be blunt, if we can turn around the U.S. auto industry, the possibilities are endless.
